Subject: Troll colours?

Hi, just got hold of my first troll for my new Night Goblin army - it's the old BFSP one. Can't think of a colour scheme for it at all - my Gobbos tribal colours are purple, which is also the colour I'll be doing any squigs I get. I don't want to paint it in the greyish colour they originally came in, horrendously boring and the big stone head he's waving around isn't going to stand out against that. Green is reserved for my River Trolls (though I'll be only using the old ones ) but I'm really struggling for a main colour.
It's currently undercoated black, sat on my painting desk, daring me to try something. Speed is of the essence with this army, painting it for gaming so I'm not going to have time to do layers of blending/highlighting. Ideally want something that stands out a little, where I can use inks & drybrushing for quicker effects than proper highlighting.
Any suggestions?

I went for the old catachan green (I believe, at least a somewhat dark and dirty green) with heavily washed bleached bone for the head. Looks pretty decent.

Not a bad idea - have you got any pictures of it?
My only concern is the green won't stand out enough against the green...skins...

I have some painted trolls in my gallery which I could let you know what colours to use etc has lots of purple tones in it so should blend with your army jubbly!

Flippa, just had a look and those schemes are awesome - how did you do them?

Base coat of Codex Grey (Now Dawnstone)
Highlight up with Space Wolf Grey (Now Fenrisian Grey)
Shade down in the crevices with Rax Earthshade and Leviathon Purple, shade and washes accordingly
Use red glaze or Bloodletter glaze to build warmth and depth to the nose, lips, ears and spots
add details for eyes, teeth, metal, claws etc
Varnish with a gloss varnish, I use Pledge Multi Surface Wax once dry use blue glaze to the scales (sparingly you just want to add depth)
Spray with matt varnish and finish base with static grass etc.
I have some more trolls on the table and can do a walkthrough if you're interested, although I wouldn't normally consider my stuff good enough to warrant a "How To"
If you have any problems pm me and I'll try and explain any bits.

Cheers, my fellow Crafty Gobbo! I've got 95% of those paints anyway so I'll have a bash and see how we get on, but I'll be cutting corners a little due to speed constraints.
If I remember, I'll post pics!
EDIT: just noticed we joined at pretty much the same time. Crafty UK Goblins ftw!

Thanks again. Just finished 8 bases of Snotlings and am about to start the troll.
One question - when applying the earthshade & leviathan purple after the grey, what wash is going where and in what order?
Cheers!

I tend to use the earthshade first in the recesses then colour outwards with the purple in a feathering style

Trying to resolve the word 'feathering' with the concept of 'speed painting' lol! Anyway, off to do the first coat of Codex Grey - the original paint names will never die!

Good luck in the trolls... it really doesn't take too long to feather out the purple once you get going...just use 2 brushed one to apply and one to move it about, it's what I do Remember post your pics when done

Crafty Gobbo woke me up to show off his troll work in progress. Even in my half asleep state it looked good. Can't wait to get some Ogres and stomp my dear brother's Gobbos into a fine paste.

Looking good... I think that the highlight up to Space Wolf Grey is too much SWG, consider making it slightly less SWG and more Codex, then I think the Agrax earthshade and purple needs to be a bit more defined It's a good looking troll... If that's even possible
