So I broke down and bought this little game (and here I still have so many recent purchases I haven't even played yet). For those of you who aren't familiar with it, it is pretty much "Starship Troopers the RPG". You are the 16th brigade of the 3rd Expeditionary Crops. You left the paradise of Terra for one reason and one reason only, to kill aliens. Your orders are to "kill as many lifeforms as you can".

It is one of those "rules light storytelling" games that are really popular these days and I normally can't stand (just give me crunch dang it!) but the setting was enough to make me pull the trigger on the purchase, and the system is actually really cool. It plays a lot like a (very simple) wargame during combat. You have to manage your range from the aliens and select the right weapon for each range. Other than the combat system though the game doesn't really give you much else to go on as far as rules. They pretty much expect the GM to make it up on the bounce.

So, come to think of it, it's actually a perfect recipe for an RPG I enjoy. The two main components I need in an RPG are an interesting and meaningful method of conflict resolution (normally combat) that is both fun to play and provides enough detail to be tactically stimulating, and the ability to not have a lot of rules for other stuff so we can just wing it to let the story go where we want it to.

I plan on running it this Friday for the first time. I'm strongly leaning towards re-skinning the setting into ancient Sparta, and letting the players kick the Persian's butt at thermopylae, then let the Grecian army rampage back across the Persian Empire.

Anybody else ever read/tried out this game? It seems like the kind of game you either 100% love or just aren't interested in, depending on how willing you are to get into it and play nice with the system.

I have had this for a couple of years now but not played it yet. I look forward to hearing how your session goes.

I got 3:16 from a friend who was clearing out some of his RPG's. I think it has a lot of potential for fun, as long as the group you play with is big on storytelling and doesn't mind (very) rules-light combat.

The challenge is getting everyone on board to roleplay the disillusionment of soldiers killing things for a new order that will want to dispose of them. It's pretty perfect for Horus Heresy, you kill hordes of aliens then you work out your genetically modified daddy issues.

So, I'm afraid what I figured would happen ended up happening. We had 7 people who wanted to play RPGs this meeting (RPG club with my college) and one other person who wanted to run something. So we ended up with a group of 5, the other person running his game, and me left out in the cold. So a session report might end up happening at some point, but not today I am afraid.

I will keep this thread updated in case I actually run the dang thing, although given my recent success record in getting a group together you all might be waiting a while.
