Ok first the boring back story, i am sorry in advance. I have played 40k sense 1999 and i have had many armies, the last time i played was in 5th. At the end of 5th i was painting more than playing and i painted an army for a guy who payed me in necrons. Flash forward about 5 years and i moved to Roswell NM and re-found my necrons. Once here i came across a deal that i could not pass up and got even more necrons to"round out" my army. Now i have this "huge" army of 5000 points. My question is what compilation of models would make the better army for a 1500 and 2000 point game non tournament. Thank you for your time and input. The models i have are as follows.

Nemesor Zahndrekh and Vargard Obyron
1xOverlord
1xLord
2x Destroyer Lords
2x Crypteks
80x Warriors
20x Immortals
5x Lychguard
5x Triarch Praetorians
20x Scarab bases
12x Destroyers
3x Heavy Destroyers
2x Tomb Spyders (old models)
3x Wraiths (old models)
2x Monoliths
1x Night Scythe (i have magnets for doom)
3x Ghost Ark ( magnets)
1x Catacomb Command Barge ( might try magnets)

With what you've got, I might go with an AV-13 wall list.
Just blobs of Warriors, accompanied by ResOrb Lords, with Ghost Ark support.
Tactically throw in a few Harbingers here and there and you can easily have a semi-competitive list.

It depends who you play really. If you know your up vs a lot of tanks etc, id be tempted to created a list with a lot if scarabs/ tomb spyders. But vs hordes your better with barges and tomb blades. Id make a list for each,

If you want an all round list id want a few flyers (although you have just 1)
If not flyers, id go with LOTS of warriors and lots of ghost arks.
Defo take 1 2 or even 3 barges. There ace.
I persoanlly go with 6 wraiths and a destroyer lord but thats as i do immortals and scythes. If you have lots of warriors then a normall overlord is your man, zandrekh is also good here too depending on what you give your generic overlord.

I dont want to design a list for you but what id suggest is figure out how you plan to do battle (defend/attack) (shooty army or fighty army) then go from there

Out of my Mind

The AV Wall or Foot slog would be best.

Warriors quickly become the best unit in the entire codex once you start supporting them and you've got enough Warriors to get you going. Zahndrekh is also the best Character to start out with and use if you're going to play with a Character. I wouldn't really bother with the Praetorians as you get back into the game, save those for trying out after you got a handle on the rules. I'd also proxy out the Lychguard (if you have them with Warscythes) as Lords, if they're Shield-guard, then shelf them as well.

Something to consider with what you have.

Zahndrekh with the Monoliths and that many Infantry is a Lethal Combo now. So a decent starter list would look something like this.

Zahndrekh
2 Harbingers of Destruction (Destructeks)
20 Warriors (For Zahndrekh)
9 Warriors in a Ghost Ark (For Destructek A)
9 Warriors in a Ghost Ark (For Destructek B)
10 Immortals (Gauss) - In Reserve
10 Immortals (Gauss) - In Reserve
Monolith - In Reserve
Monolith - In Reserve

Try to go second as OFTEN as you can. Zahndrekh will auto Deep Strike the Monoliths on your opponents turn giving him something else to deal with, just be careful because it'll happen before your opponent moves or shoots, so if they have Melta/Haywire weapons then they might not survive. Those that do survive, can auto bring in the Immortals from Reserve right into Rapid Fire range, and into the fight. If you managed to squeeze in Obyron, then you can Veil over the 20 Warriors to surprise your opponent with quite a few shots on turn 2. Alternatively, you can put one of the Immortal squads in the Nightscythe, and use the 2nd Monolith for the 20 Warriors to achieve the same effect provided the Immortals in the Nightscythe make their reserve rolls.

It seems like a mix of footslogging along w/ Warriors in Ghost Arks and some back up with the Night Scythe and Monoliths would be super fun list to play plus you got like 20 Scarabs and huge squads of Destroyers.

I'd make the most out of all those warriors you have.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

Getting up to date on the new rules is taking its toll. As of now I don't have an opponent to play with but I want to have an idea what to play before I have to play. The ideas and tactics given are great and I'll try practicing these before my first game. At least I have a starting point and mindset now. Thanx guys.

Just keep in mind, you may have a new rule set to learn this coming summer...

I am not up to date on rumors and news so I will ask, what new set? New codex?

There is a rumor, and it's been fairly consistent, that 40k is getting a rules update this summer. It's not a complete change to the existing rules, but it might affect how certain units work or interact, or how they're played.

It won't affect much if you learn the rules running a Warrior or Infantry heavy list, so I wouldn't worry about it until it gets here.
