So, My group is runninga 40k in 40 minutes mini tournament thing. Not a real tournament, We probably wont keep track of score or anything but still. I tried my necrons in a match of it today, And got crushed.. So I thought.. Maybe Tau will do better?

The rules are
400 points (No more then 100 points on a single model)
No psycher over lvl 1
Must have one troops choice
At most one HQ (Not not needed)
Must have a army leader (If no HQ other character must be chosen)
At most 2 choices each from Elites, Fast Attack and Heavy Support
No more then 3 wounds on a model
No special characters
All non-vehicle models are scoring
No 2+ armor saves
No armor value higher then 33
No deep strike or reserves
No Warlord Traits

I have come up with 2 lists that hit the 400 point mark exactly.

And I came up with this list for my Tau
Crisis Suit
-Shas'Vre
-2 Plasma Rifles
-Crisis Suit
-2 Plasma Rifle
-Crisis Suit
-2 Plasma rifle

7 Fire Warriors

6 Fire Warriors

Piranha

7 Pathfinders

400

And

Crisis Suit
-Shas'Vre
-2 Plasma Rifles
-Crisis Suit
-2 Plasma Rifles
-Crisis Suit
-2 Plasma Rifles

11 Kroot

10 Kroot

6 Fire Warriors

6 Fire Warriors

400

The Crisis Shas'Vre is my leader (Sicne it dosent have to be a HQ, Just a character)

And the models I own that I can build the list from are
6 Crisis Suits
38 Fire Warriors
8 Pathfinders
1 Devilfish
3 Broadsides
12 Gun Drones
26 Kroot
Aun'Shi
Aun'Va with his bodyguards
1 Piranha
1 Riptide

Bush? No, Eldar Ranger

The second one is a serious glass sword. Kroot are great at high points when you can sneak them in behind Riptides and tanks. At 400, they're easy pickings for almost everyone. I'd suggest the first list with mild modifications to the suit choices(you don't need all that AP 2) grab a burst cannon on two of them and a fusion gun on the third. This gives you stout AT and more dakka against, say, Guard. I'd also suggest dumping the Piranha for more Firewarriors for more dakka over maneuverability. This will also lessen the chance of them just killing your troops to force a loss.

Good luck!

What will you be facing against? It helps out if we know what you might go against to give the best all rounded list

Drop all the foot sloggers, add more suits. keeping suits costs down to around 45-55 each would allow for 8-9 suits. With some good number crunching and min/maxing could get to 10 i can imagine. That'd be enough

I'l be facing Eldar, Orks, Astra Militarum and Space Marines.. Maybe some other stuff but thats all I know of.. and I have no idea what kind of lists they have..

400 points of Orks might well be scary. the Space marines will likely be 2 squads of tac marines in plasbacks but might not be.

No idea what the IG player's likely to have. Could go with chimeras and meltas or lots and lots of men i'm not sure. they have no tanks so you got that on your side atleast.

Same goes with the Eldar. No Wave Serpents makes me wonder, maybe dire avenger spam or just a balanced aspect warrior list, i don't have much experience with competitive eldar.

Oh, my advice i;d say take the first list but fix your suits.

drop the Shas'vre upgrade. make 1 suit flamer + plasma rifle with shield drone. 1 suit double plasmas and shield drone and 3rd cyclic ion blaster, Flamer and shield drone.

Shield drones on suits now they're a 12 point upgrade and every suit can take upto 2 running shield drones is pretty much a given. Specially with them being cheaper than a shield generator :/

i'd also be tempted to drop the pirahna so you can put rail rifles on the pathfinders. 1 Ion rifle and 2 rail rifle's are a good mix. Specially with how pathfinders are how 3 special weapons regardless of size. So maybe if you can fit it in just run 2 squads of 4 with 3 weapons per squad. Feel they'd have a much better impact against those teams than a small firewarrior group.

Well, If I drop the Shas'Vre I have no character thus no legal list. Must have a HQ OR A Character to be your leader (As one of the game types is assassination) I took the plasma rifles to deal with the marine player and any other heavy infantry I might face, Thinking the Fire Warriors and Piranha would be enough to deal with the lighter infantry..

But the tips and all is very helpful ^_^ Thank you all!

Well the Orks will have a lot of models and flamers will help mitigate that a bit and wall of death will make him think twice about charging a suit.

If you have a decent sized pathfinder squad then chucking in a recon drone is always worth it. 24+" assault 2 pulse weapons are gold. Plus it also gives you the burst cannon that the pirahna had.

I mean the only team you have to worry about with 3+'s is marines and he won't have enough models to really win out in any dragged out fire fights against str 8 ap 1 rail rifles or str 7 assault 3 ion blaster.

I just don't see a lone Piranha doing anything in a game is all. Those 40pts could go better elsewhere.

I could offer a prospective 3rd list if you'd like. But it wouldn't be till tonight as i'm out for a day of gaming myself XD

If you're really intend on using fire warriors for a majoy proportion of shooting then might i sugest the option of a Cadre Fireblade? Vollyfire and split fire are good rules to add. Plus he can add a shield drone to the unit.

The Eldar player is going to be a huge threat if you decide to go crisis suit spam. Dark Reapers will eat them for breakfast, then deal with everything else. Remember that they have slow and purposeful, letting them now move and shoot. and with their battle focus, jump shoot jump for your crisis suits are going to have a problem. The long range of theirs will also be a big problem, and going Dark Reapers will also deal with every other opponent except Orks.

You need to get more shots to deal with The possibility of an Ork horde, or a Astra Militarum. Plasma isn't necessary for the Space Marines, shoot them enough with fire warriors and they'll fall soon enough. Eldar will be a major threat with all of their units maneuverability.

My suggestion, get a ton of fire warriors, get an Ethereal, and put him in a fire warriors blob. It will give you tons on shots, which will make the Space Marines, Orks and Astra Militarum wary of getting within 36" of you. If the Eldar player does take Dark Reapers, they won;t be able to take out all of the fire warriors that won't run because of the Ethereal. Also take a Devilfish to get the Ethereal out of there if things look a little dicey.

My suggested list is this

Ethereal 50pts

3x 10 man fire warriors 90pts each

Devilfish (basic) 80pts (just put it on any of the fire warrior teams)

30 s5 ap5 shots at least, which could be at 90 shots at half range, not even counting the devilfish. They won't want to get close, and you won't run out of models easily. Just keep the Ethereal safe

Alright, Today when I was in the gaming club I wrote together another rather bad attempt at a list!

Cadre Fireblade
12 Fire Warriors
7 Fire Warriors
4 Pathfinders
-3 Ion Rifles
4 Pathfinders
-3 Rail Rifles

My advice would be to not take the rail rifles. According to your first post, you aren't allowed to bring 2+ armor, so you don't need really good AP. I would change the rail guns to more ion rifles, and put in two more fire warriors. more shots at the same range.

I think I can see what you plan to do with them, and all I can tell you is to protect those pathfinders. Over 150 points in a small game is a big loss. With the special weapons they will be a big target, and the small number of them will be an easy kill if you don't protect them.

What was wrong with the necrons? 400 pts could get you an overlord with warscythe, 5 immortals, and two annihilation barges, with points to spare.

Edit: Actually this doesn't leave many scoring units, but something like this could work

Cant have Annihilation barges, Or any necron vehicles, As their shields put up their armor value to 13 13 11. That is 37 compared to the max allowed of 33. And putting 100 points on a HQ dosent leave much points for many other things.. (And I got totaly whiped out without managing to kill a single enemy model..)
