The most common way of approach, that I know of, is using the power of green stuff. The "death guard" appearance can also be achieved via the painting, focusing on decay (e.g rust). Otherwise I would hit the internet for a bit of inspiration.
Hope this helps at least a bit!

I've tried a bit of green stuff on my defiler I'm fairly happy with the result but I think I get disheartened looking at the epic models online and mine don't look as good!
I'm just starting out again so I guess I'll have to try and find my way to epicness!

I can not even grasp how many times I have felt the exact same thing.
Though you do get dishearted use that "epicness" as a goal for yourself. Having a goal is a great motivator but might however not work for everyone.
My first piece of "green stuffing" was basically a blob but for some unfathomable reason I still keep it...but oh is it good to look at it and see where I am now.

Thanks for the support mate, I might even post a picture my nurgly defiler when I've painted it....I could do with the constructive criticism! Should have it done by the weekend!

Are you asking for advice on simply creating some Plague marine style models i.e. mold and puss on them, fleshy mutations and stuff.
Or are you looking for some advice on painting the 'Death Guard' colour scheme?
They are hugely different questions

Both! Lol all advice is welcome add I say I'm new to this and though I've painted a squad of plague marines to a half decent standard, I'm struggling to make the highlights work, they are pretty much a Basecoat and a wash then I pick out the details.
I've had some success with green stuff making some nice rotten bits on my defiler and I've made some typhus style vents on it to......but the effects are basic........

Something I usually do is take my pin vice and drill shallow holes in the models armor using two or three different sized bits. It helps with the pitted decaying look.
I always use standard space marines when making my death guard troops so your mileage may vary.

That forge world stuff looks good but I think for this set I'll try my own conversion....though it's given me some ideas!
