Varying cities in the North

I've been slinking around the Army Lists section of Dakka for a while now, trying to pick up as much as possible. I am looking for help with my list that is to take on a variety of armies at a semi-competitive level in my local Games Workshop. Here we go:

HQ:
Master of the Forge 90
-Techmarine 50

Troops:
Tactical Squad (10 man, meltagun, meltabombs, rhino) 190
Tactical Squad (10 man, flamer, meltabombs, rhino) 185

Elites
2 Mortis Pattern Contemptor Dreadnoughts (Kheres Assault Cannons) 360

Fast Attack
Stormtalon (skyhammer) 125

However, I was wondering whether it would be worth taking out the Stormtalon (and meltabombs) as the Contemptors are already anti-air, to get another 9 man Tactical Squad and rhino. This would fit if I also took one man from each existing Tactical Squad in the list. This would give me more scoring units, but less large targets, meaning my Contemptors would draw the majority of the enemy's fire and do less damage. Or, also, an Aegis with Quad Cannon instead of the Stormtalon for immediate AA and also protection for anyone holding backfield objectives etc. Any help weighing up the pros and cons or any other constructive criticism and/or feedback would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I would really love any feedback at all on this list, or my queries written beneath it.

id drop the talon and pick up another tech marine then join them in each of the rhinos to follow the noughts and repair them. Maybe use the remaining points to take drop pods for the noughts

Why would I take drop pods for these dreadnoughts? Their aim is to stay out of melta range etc and use their own 24" range to shoot from further back, so surely drop pods would be counterintuitive?

Question first, what book are the contemptor mortis dreads from? I'm using Battlescribe to put together an answer and it says they come in at 200 a piece with the dual Kheres assault cannons.. Just curious.

Anyway, I'd drop the Techmarine, put the master on a bike with conversion Beamer and drop the stormtalon. I'd add an aegis with quad gun and a group of scouts to man it. I'd deploy the aegis up 6" from deployment and scout them up, and turn 1 move the dreads up behind it. They are only 24" so this will give you a bit more reach. I normally like melta bombs on tac squads but think you'll have to drop them and take flamers on both to make this fit.. I think. I like the idea of the defense line to really protect the dreads and allow them to hit infantry in transports (either they will open them, or the MotF will) and still have dedicated AA.

Hope this helps!

I'm using Imperial Armour Aeronautica, but they're also 180 each in Imperial Armour 2 as I also have that.

I like that idea, but bear in mind that if the Dreadnoughts don't move they gain the Skyfire and Interceptor rules that shooting phase, so is the Quad Gun entirely necessary?

A quad gun seems to be unnecessary. How many fliers to you expect at this pt level. I'd keep the list as it is.

There are obviously a lot of Tau and Eldar, but I don't know how many fliers per army, if there was a Quad Gun then I'd be able to target fliers whilst still focusing on any advancing forces on ground level? I know I have just contradicted my previous point, but I'm trying to weigh up each option.

I can see the argument for leaving out the quad gun, that's fine. I would consider however giving the MotF a bike with conversion beamer. Bing a lone model, he will be easily targeted and can die quickly.. I have used this concept before while keeping him far enough back to hide and shoot, yet repair an Imperial Knight.. Works pretty well. I also don't see the point of the Techmarine... He suffers from the same issue but isn't nearly as effective. At 50 points, he's almost a scoring 5 man bolter scout squad that can outflank late game to grab an objective. I don't think using him to repair a rhino is viable.. More times than not the rhinos are going to get wrecked or explode.. Plus if they are being used as a mobile bunker they can sit still and repair themselves on their own . I just think there is something you can do with those points that will serve you better.

Thanks for the feedback, I definitely agree with your points on both the Master of the Forge and Techmarine, and Scouts would indeed be versatile. Bearing this in mind, I have a revised list:

Master of the Forge (bike, conversion beamer) 130

Tactical Squad (flamer, rhino) 145
Tactical Squad (rhino) 140
Scout Squad 55

Mortis Contemptor Dreadnought (kheres assault cannons) 180
Mortis Contemptor Dreadnought (kheres assault cannons) 180

Aegis Defence Line (quad gun) 100

1000

I couldn't find a better way to spend the Quad Gun points, except maybe getting the Lascannon, and then either getting Sniper Rifles and Camo Cloaks for the Scouts behind the Defence Line for a cheeky 2+ cover save, or buying a special weapon for the second Tactical Squad.

I like it. I'd try it with the quad gun and see if the Tacticals need better weapons. If they do, go for the Icarus lascannon and give them both flamers and melta bombs, or multimeltas.
