I always thought the more rules the better the game . i just can't get over few rules this game has so use to gw games and all the rules fight and how thing can be intrupeted so many different ways

So, did you find it an improvement over WHFB? I see KoW being a successor to WHFB 6th edition. Also, you probably could have adjusted your other title and put this post in as an update. Then again, the Mantic subforum doesn't have too many posts, so maybe this is fine after all.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

I think the approachabiity of the rules is what may convince me to get a Forces of Nature army when that happens; I've never played WHFB (or KoW), but I think 40k takes up my quota of convoluted and poorly laid out set of rules all on its own.

I have played Deadzone, and that is really fun, super easy to get into and understand, and super tactical, and Kings of War from a read through seems to share the same high points.

Glad to hear you give it a go and, more importantly, that you had fun.

Mantic makes a lot of very clean and fun games, though I honestly prefer GW models in fantasy. Nice thing about Mantic is that they don't get bent out of shape if you decide you like another model better!

The rules really take nothing From the game play i like how the have a stay line for what you to melee shooting and ur over all defense lot easier then looking up charts and magic is not game changeing but usefull too my opponent had elves with 3 mages i thought i was doomed because iam so use to how powerfull elves magic can be.

only have 1? Can heros never join a unit

^ Nope, they can't join a unit, one of the differences from warhammer.

They're less squishy than in warhammer, and more for support, take banner bearers and keep them behind your lines for inspiring, take mages to zap things, and take combat heros for hunting artillery or small units.

Get a big Elf lord on dragon. If you play a good army, you only need to ally a single infantry block of 20 elves to get him. They're beat sticks AND its a really cool model.

If you do not mind an almost completely UNofficial way of putting characters in units, look at Ironwatch Issue 1 - which has expanded campaign rules, including Bodyguard Units. Typically just one or two figures, but they can make a huge difference in the survival of a general.

Orcs get Kronies - five big orcs to act as bodyguards.

Goblins only get one - a giant that carries the goblin wizard around on its shoulders.

Men only get two - but they are mounted, as is the General.

I would like to see this article expanded further, and if I had time I would do so myself (and still very well might. I want to do a liche king with a ten skeleton retinue).

Sounds like you enjoyed yourself, Zilka. Nice one. It is a bit of mental gear change after how claggy the WHFB rules are, but I honestly never see myself going back after trying KoW.

And the best part is, if you have a WHFB army the chances are you don't even have to collect a new army to play KoW, so you can still play both if you want to.

I think one of the bigger differences to get your head around are how heroes are treated, as you brought up. KoW goes for a more realistic route that sending a lone model, hero or not, against a whole unit is most likely going to get that hero killed. There are exceptions, but for the most part it's all about the units.

The galaxy is littered with the single-planet graveyards of civilisations which made the economically sensible decision not to explore space.

From a modelling stand point you can use heroic models as your unit leaders to are them stand out and look cool. But in terms of rules Hero's are loners.

Tbh I like the sound of Hero's with body guards as I have always felt it silly to have one guy running around alone on the battlefield.

I plan to model my general with body guards and banner bearers but have all measurements done from his cavalry base so that there is no effect on the game itself it will just be visual.

I used my dwarf king as a flank unit to help take out units

Dwarf on foot? Or did you use the mounted Brock king? Remember, individuals (like a king on foot) wouldn't get an attack bonus for flanks, but non-individuals would get the bonus. I don't have my book on me, atm, so I'm not sure if the Brock king on badger counts as an individual or not. Dwarf kings do have a butt-ton of attacks though, and with a high strength hammer, he could probably do some serious damage, even without flank bonuses. I still recommend an Elf King on Dragon to deal with pesky flanks.

I really like the elf king on dragon model. It's hard to believe that that model and the drakons come from the same company never mind see in the same range and army.

I have the drakons painted up like merry-go-round critters - complete with pole.... (I actually like them done up that way....)

I played my first games of KoW today. My friend brought out his Elves and Undead, and we played one game then switched and played again. Both 1,000 point games took about an hour each. Amazing!

I really like how smooth the game is. It took maybe two turns to get the basics down pat. Remembering little things like who has Crushing Strength and that one Elite re-roll took a little longer but I was really impressed with the rules overall. I am really excited for some more and now have an impetus to finally finish my High Elves that I have been working on for fifteen (!) years now.
