Hi all,

My local gaming group has taken the plunge into Warmachine and started off with the Khador-Menoth 2-player set to spark interest. I'd like to start building a force of my own and have settled on Mercenaries as my chosen faction.
I have done some reading on BattleCollege and would appreciate any thoughts on my first list. It is intended to play against the other starter armies and be fun for all.

Magnus the Traitor
Mule
Nomad
Renegade
6x Steelhead Halberdiers
Kell Bailoch

20/20pts

I have very little idea of what I'm doing but am 100% set on both Magnus and Kell. Any other advice is greatly appreciated.

Looks good. The advice I give to everyone starting this game is to not initially worry about "synergy" and "combos" and all that and just take what they think looks cool.

Once you've got a hang on the game then you worry about the proper performance level of your list if that's how you roll.

Steelheads are always good. A nice cheap and cheerful unit. Anyone who does not like them is lying.

Looks good. But some warjack buffing solos would be better than a few weak troops.

You should try getting another renegade in, so you can use both jacks rockets for an assignations.

I don't like them, and I'm really not lying.

Do not take this as me trying to talk anyone out of them. They're every bit the good unit that people say, and it's more a personal choice on my part. For one, I'm just not a fan of the models (I've seen someone sit and assemble them and I was like "I'm never doing that."), and for another, I seem to always want those synergies like the Cavalry and Stannis whenever I even take a look over them in War Room. For a beginner just starting out the synergies aren't so important, but it is something to keep in mind as you grow your collection, especially if you want to play competitively.

That Magnus list is a great start, and has everything that you could ask for as far as learning the game goes. The Nomad is an amazing Warjack, and the Mule is often undervalued in the post Collosal Meta. Kell is also one of the game's best snipers, 2 shots at Rat 10 is near guaranteed to snipe out two single wound infantry each game.
