Is the message just deleted automatically? Does it just show up like it does in the forums, with their message blanked out but with the option to view it anyway?

To my knowledge, no.

It works just like any other PM. You don't have to read it and you can delete if you wish.

The Ignore function has no effect on PMs. You have the option of just not opening a PM, however.
