Subject: keeping bases clean?

Been playing for as while, and I normally base my miniatures then prime them, which leaves the base Grey I don't overly mind this, but when I paint I always get paint on the bases doing the feet or it splattering...what would I need to do to fix this. My only idea so far was to prime them baseless and flipping the models/ a few times to get them covered then gluing them to an old base, then rebase on the final base once I was done, but that seemed like a ton of work, for an entire vampire counts/imperial guard armies I bought.
Any painting tips/ideas? How do you keep your bases clean?

I paint bases at the end. Keeps me sane and I don't have to care about being messy with the models feet.
If I where making some sort of display base I'd probably paint it on its own and paint the mini on wires pinned into its feet on the top of an old paint pot or something.

I do my bases separately. I put a pin in the foot (or feet depending) of the model and put that i a piece of cork or clips. When Its all done I put the two together.
It gives you easier access to the underside of your models and makes basing. much much easier.

Similar to the other thoughts...
Either
Paint the mini, then base it.
OR
Paint or add scenic details to the base once the mini is done.
For my jetbikes and drones, I do the former (paint them before attaching to the flight stand base) and for most other minis I do the latter (paint and put scenic details on the base).

Thanks for the help, I have never messed with that fake grass/rock stuff for my bases so I have a few questions.
1. Do I just glue where I want the stuff to stick?
2. Does the stuff fall off easily? Don't want to have mange bases and fluffy foam trays.
3. Is it possible to fix if I mess it up? Automatically Appended Next Post: I will probably paint on base then cover it since I am too lazy to spend so much time with each guardsman/ skeleton/ ghoul/ tanks.

1 - Yes
2 - No, if you use enough glue and let it dry.
3 - yes.
Go to youtube, and search for "scenic basing" or "flocking bases" etc.
You should find lot of videos.
Or even google "how to make scenic bases" will return dozens of hits (I just checked).
best of luck and have fun!
