Wondering Why the Emperor Left

United Kingdom

So I've dipped into X-Wing and bought the starter box and I'm just wondering,
-what to expect from this game in terms of how it plays
-does it get repetitive easily as there are only 2 factions
-is it balanced?

Coming from a 40k background I was just curious about the game I just bought!

Thanks, any insight or beat tricks will be appreciated!

The balance is smartly managed, obviously you'll see stronger vs weaker, but fantasy flight are very good at rebalancing with future releases

A few extra ships from each faction and you'll find that games won't get repetitive or boring.

If you're playing friendly games, the key thing is to keep changing your ship/upgrade selections. That way you're never quite sure how the game will turn out.

I've definitely found that, at least for casual play, there are plenty of squad list options for each faction that the game doesn't get repetitive. Different squad lists will obviously also play differently in terms of strategy, style, etc.

More to the point though, the game does seem to be pretty well balanced. With only a few exceptions that I've seen so far, most any list can at least be competitive at the casual level. Naturally, there are a few lists running around that seem to be particularly popular come tournament time, but even then, there are still a number of viable options based on results that I have seen (World's last year had, I think, at least 4 different types of squads in the Top 8 if I am not mistaken) which shows both the balance and the variety that are available.

In particular, I think FFG is taking steps to actually try to make even more squad lists competitive at the tournament level, while not completely obliterating any particular type of list. The classic example of this is the Tie Swarm which has been extremely popular in tournament play. There are a lot of pilots/upgrades coming out that, at least on paper, seem to be directly targeted at the Swarm (I'm looking at you Lt. Blount). That said though, the Swarm will still be strong, and even got a bit of a boost with a recent change to the tournament scoring rules.

Technically you can have 3 factions as the falcon and slave 1 can be used as pirates easily enough.

I've been having great fun playing with my imps i run different lists all the time trying out different tactics and each expansion adds to the game with out imbalancing it which is a nice change from 40k.

And once the Z-95 Headhunters get released, you can throw them in there too for cheap pirate fodder as well! Maybe throw in the occasional Y-Wing too, you could have a pretty decent pirate faction.
