With all of the talk about how the new GW tool set was overpriced, I decided to see what one could buy if you wanted to spend as much as you would on GW tools. It was kind of a fun exercise. I love shopping for tools but since I'm not really in need of replacing all of my tools at the moment it gave me an excuse to do a hypothetical shopping trip.
You can check out my findings here - http://jayadan.com/blog/2014/4/29/thoughts-on-the-new-citadel-tool-range
Bottom line - Pretty much every tool in the Citadel arsenal is at the very top end of the price spectrum for its quality level. That doesn't mean I still don't want some of them.

It's a good balanced look at how the citadel tools compare to other tool brands, but I don't think you're going to stop anyone hosting the prices

My goal was only to see what you could get for the same money, as opposed to seeing how little you could spend on the same kinds of tools. That's all. The GW tools are absurdly high priced. On the other hand, the cutters, the mold line scraper and the sculpting tools are really nice. I might end up getting all of those at some point.

Interesting post. Some of the new citadel tools certainly look nice (others look like nothing special), but the prices are shocking.
The sculpting tool isn't particularly great either and any sculptor will tell you you are mistaken about them all being repurposed dental tools. Just head to your local art store and pick up a small sculpting set. For the same price or less You'll get just as much quality and probably twice as many sizes.
I can't think of a single GW tool that isn't surpassed by what is offered at the same price point elsewhere.
At least they got rid of the worst stinker, the "hobby vise". I was so annoyed when I bought that plastic (even the chrome screw was plastic), non-angle-adjustable POS that they charged 15 bucks for. I picked up a fully adjustable all-metal mini-table vise for the same price as soon as I could.

Actually, if you go into any average hobby store and look at the sculpting tool selection they are pretty much all dental tools. Actual sculpting tools tend to be a bit on the large size for our hobby.

Not if you buy the small ones. Any good ART store should be able to get you comparable sizes and shapes for less than GW prices. Add to that, the fact that GW doesn't even make silicone clay shapers one of the best tools ever for sculpting and smoothing GS.

I was able to find some equivalent sculpting tools (turns out they are sometimes referred to as modeling tools, which may be why I was coming up empty before). Cheap they are not:
