Hello everyone,

I'm trying to create a competitive but fluffy Ulthwe list that doesn't rely heavily on wave serpents.

For those unfamiliar, that means focusing as little on aspect warriors as possible, and at the absolute most 1 exarch. Phoenix lords not-withstanding. Also means heavy emphasis on Guardians/things piloted by guardians or manned by them, and Psykers.

Here's what I've got so far:

Fortification:

ADL with Lascannon

HQ:

Farseer

Spirit seer

Troops:

10 Guardians in wave serpent (normal setup) with a BL platform

5 Wraithguard in a wave serpent (normal setup) with wraith cannons

Heavy Support:

Vaul's wrath support battery with 3 Vibro Cannons (Contemplating moving ADL forward, changing vibro for D cannons).

3 War Walkers with 2 Bright Lances each

5 Dark Reapers with Exarch who has fast shot and night vision (mans the gun) and starshot/starswarm missiles.

I think I'm set for anti-armor, and have decent protection for my farseer in the artillery and my wraithseer in the wraithguard.

However, as it stands, I have 1330 points total, so just shy of 700 points to play with. What changes or suggestions would you make to make up for using the wave serpent as a Str6/7 weapons platform?

it doesn't feel like an Ulthwe list without a Seer Council.

I personally runs Vibrocannons because I am light on Ranged AT.

I think you're going to do much better with Shadow Weavers personally.

Vibrocannons will require Twin Linking every turn...but then they are well worth their points.

While Bright Lances are good, every single person is going to tell you to get the scatter laser on that serpent. I run two scatter serpents even though I hate doing what everyone is doing...it's too good not to...

I would add a few more dark reapers 5 isn't very survivable even behind an aegis and maybe add some jetbikes for late game scoring.

I've found that shadow weavers drop off significantly if the opponent spreads out even a little, but I do really like them. Plus putting my farseer there pretty much guarantees twin linking =D

As for the wave serpent "normal loadout" means it's got those scatter lasers, along with a shuriken cannon and holofields. The bright lance is on a weapons platform with the guardians.

The thing is...more dark reapers isn't very affordable at these points.

The good news is that Ulthwe fluff fits with the competitive aspects(not the warriors) of the codex. If you don't want to spam serpents, you can easily hit 700 more points without adding any others.

Vibros are good but they are eating a guide/prescience each turn, while your reapers and walkers are going to be begging for said powers as well. You are quite set on heavy AT, with enough mobility and dakka for 1300 pts.

The main thing to add would be another 2 troop choices. Another group of guardians in a serpent, wraiths in a serpent, 10 wraiths on foot, guardian jetbikes, or a big 20 man blob of guardians with 2 weapon platforms. Guardians and wraiths need psychic support, so keep that in mind. Avengers work well on foot if you need more rank and file, and maybe a squad of rangers to outflank.snipe.

Off the bat add a warlock to your support batteries. With conceal, you get a 2+ cover save behind the line, or if your lucky enough to roll protect 2+/4+ guns are not going anywhere anytime soon. I would stay away from the D cannon option- you get too close for comfort and the best part of guns is staying cheap.

Hawks and spiders are great for your fast aspects: Hawks provide anti horde and Av14, while warp spiders are good against everything but hordes and Av14. Take accordingly.

Ah, mistake of reading too fast.

I also think you need a warlock for some guaranteed conceal for vaul's wrath...or other shenanigans.

I always run a warlock with them and might put my farseer on a bike with them for first turn safety. Then my bikeseer runs up the field with my shining spears.

You need a 3rd serpent. (I only run 3)

@Serling...I like the Hawk idea. I added mine due to lack of infantry killing power.

So I added 4 warlocks, a 6 man squad of bikes with 2 SCs, a 10 man blob of wraith blades with axes and shields.

Farseer and warlock will join blades

warlock joins artillery

warlock joins guardians

warlock joins jetbikes

Blob will either hang back to protect the artillery and reapers, or will march up the field with (hopefully) fortune

I don't think you need that 4th Warlock with blades when you have a spiritseer, and the Guardians in the serpent are debateable if they need one.

I like this list taking 2...one on a bike that goes with artillary or bikes...and one on foot that goes with wraith, guardians or artillary.

Removing those allows me 80 points to play with. Keeping one for the bikes and one for the artillery.

Why not just run guardian blobs with duel BL? if you take 2 seers that's a lot of TL dakka, throw in the avatar for fearless blobs (thank you DFOC) and you can take CSG to protect you from first turn gun lines, plus the avatar loves to shoot using an Icarus lascannon.
