Getting a Winsor newton series 7 brush as a gift. Planning on getting a size 0. Which version should I get? Miniature or normal?

I'd say just go with the 'normal'. I've got a 'normal' #2/0 and a #1 from the Series 7 range and both do me perfectly well. I use the #1 as my main workhorse and the 2/0 for finer details such as eyes, text and fine highlights. From what I gather, the miniature series came about when Winsor Newton realised people were using their brushes to paint minis. They then developed a 'miniature' range with shorter bristles, from the mis-conception that smaller objects require smaller brushes. In reality, the modelers preferred WN brushes for their superior points, not due to shorter bristles. At least, that was what I was told when I asked for brush advice a while back.
TLDR - Go for normal, they'll do just as well as the miniature range, and the longer bristles will provide more 'belly' to hold paint in, without sacrificing a fine point.

Definitely normal. It's nice to have a miniature on hand for really tight spaces, but it's not a necessity.

I have 00, 0, and 1 both, and really can't tell the difference - when I grab them out of the brush holder (tips up) I try to guess which one I just picked up - I am wrong every time in regards to size and M or non-M

Miniature types have (too) short bristles, so they hold incredible small amounts of paint, which will also draw fairly quickly. Having both, I can confirm that normal brushes are a more practical choice.
