With the way LoS works in Warmachine, I imagine it wouldn't be a bit deal. But if I liked the model of the Thorn better than the Lancer, do you imagine people would complain about using the Thorn model as a Lancer?

On a strict technical note, it would not be allowed as conversions and proxies must be at least 50% of the original model.
In practice, you'd be hard pressed to find people able to distinguish which model is Thorn and which is the generic Lancer.
Thorn basically has a slightly different spear and shield and thats it. A paintjob could easily cover up the difference.

It might not fly in a tournament, depending on the organizer. I can't see anyone caring in a casual game. In my meta at least we proxy things all the time. It seriously isn't the big deal it it is in some other gaming communities.
I suppose if a total dink wanted to complain, they'd be within their rights strictly speaking. They'd still be a dink though.

Among friends, it shouldn't be an issue, everyone I've played with has been pretty relaxed about such things.
With tournaments/events however, ask the TO for a ruling first, and be prepared for a no fairly often. Tournaments are fast and furious, so telling models apart is crucial, and where models are very similar, people still recognise details at a glance, and can get confused by a proxy. Same goes with changing out pEyriss for eEyriss, or using the Denegra's interchangeably, etcetera. If you do want to use thorn as a normal lancer at a tourney, consider taking a normal lancer along just in case (they're often cheap, as they come with the battlebox), and asking your opponents.
