I've started getting into Warmachine and am a little confused by control area. On pg 55 of Prime it states control area is "...a number of inches equal to twice its current [emphasis mine] FOCUS". I'm confused by current. Does this mean that the control area would decrease after allocating focus, since then the current focus is lessened? Or does their control area never decrease even though their focus does? It seems to me like it does decrease, which would be really awful for feats and spells which have a range of "CTRL"

FOCUS (in all caps, like that) is the stat, Focus is the stuff. FOCUS will almost always stay the same, along with your control area.

Wait, I thought it will stay the same unless something affects FOCUS (feth you pDenny). At least that's how I understood it.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

Yeah, the only things that changes your FOCUS stat that I can think of, off the top of my head, is pDenegrahs feat, that lowers opponents FOCUS by 2, thus reducing Control area by 4".

Isn't there a caster with a variable FOCUS stat and things that might increase the FOCUS?

Regardless, PP is known for making their rules forward compatible. Even if it doesn't make sense now it might later. That is one of the great things about PP is their stellar ruleset.

You might be thinking of eButcher with the variable FOC stat, but his Control area is a fixed 12" (which also means it's unaffected by pDenegrah's feat).

There's also a few models in the game that specifically state something like "this model adds 2" to your caster's control area when within (x) inches of your caster". The Squire for Cygnar and the Corolary for Convergence are the two I can think of. This just to mention that some things will specifically call out an increased control area without changing the FOCUS stat.

The Witch Coven of Garlghast have a variable FOCUS stat and a corresponding variable Control Area.
