I have been looking over Hordes for awhile now, the one that grabs my eye the most in terms of style and painting potential is the Gators/Swamp Mercs.

Where do I start? Whats a good starter combo of units to get me rolling.

The easiest place to start is to buy the Skorne battlebox, a unit of Paingiver Beast Handlers, a Paingiver Taskmaster, and a unit of Gatorman Posse. There you go, instant starting army. :-)

I kid, of course, but Skorne do run gators very well. For a pure blindwater army, pick a caster you like, at least 1 Blackhide Wrastle, at least 1 Bull Snapper, a second heavy (I like the spitter, but depending on your caster you may want a swamp horror) and two units of Posse. That will be a good base.

All their models look amazing. Though I am really split on the swamp horror vs spitter.

Swamp horror is cool, but I'd say the Spitter, just for some ranged beast support. Wrastler is definitely a good start though.

Meanwhile, Gatorman posse have just been redone in plastic, and should be out in a few months. If you want, you can grab a unit of the metals now and a unit of the plastics when they come out, so you have a better variety of poses. You'll definitely want two units of Posse if you play Gatormen, they're really a backbone unit.

A witch Doctor solo is also highly recommended, makes any unit just that much better

You'll eventually want both beasts, but I think the spitter brings a little more to start with. If you take Barny as your starting caster then buy the spitter.

Barney, the Wrassler, and the Spitter are the "battle box" for journeyman leagues.

I played crocs for a little while and had great fun both painting and gaming with them. At 50 points I would say 3 max gator units is pretty essential. Bog trog ambushes are also worth picking up and the new shamblers seem really strong too...

In terms of beasts the spitter is a solid choice and the wrastler has it's place in some lists but the strength of a gatorman army is in the posses.

If you ever want to play minions competitively though it's probably worth picking up some pigs aswell... In 3 list format gators alone can struggle

Furrows where my second choice. Love the ramshamble feel both armies have.

Furrorws have a bit more going for them in terms of model selection and more-so ranged attack?
