I can not settle on a salamanders alpha strike list. I'm throwing quite a few around with very little helpful input. My favourite marine unit is sternguard, so I thought I'd try a build with as many as I could get in. I will only be dropping 3 pods on turn one. but there will be 30 marines climbing out. I will most likely combat squad everything. I think I can deal with almost everything. Against fliers I am weak, and will be relying on the master crafted meltas mostly. I want to start going to tournaments with this list. Let me know what you think and what you would change. A point to note, I am trying to stick to a theme as best as possible.

Here it is...

1500 Pts - Codex: Space Marines Roster

Total Roster Cost: 1500

HQ: Vulkan He'stan (1#, 190 pts, Warlord)
1 Vulkan He'stan

9 Tactical Squad + Meltagun + Multi-melta

Nice list, but seven combi-meltas per Veteran Squad? I'd say a meltagun and two combis is all you need, then maybe a heavy flamer or two in order to roast whatever comes out of the transports you're blowing up, having combat squadded them? I see what you're trying to do with the five man squad, but I feel combat squads give you more versatility, and save some points. It is just a waste of points having that many combi weapons, that you can only use once, especially when the best thing about the Sternguard is their special ammunition?

Well the idea was simple. Combat squad down to two squads. Each can pop a different armoured target. I don't have to use all the melta shots in turn one, but I have the option to use them on other vehicles, TEQ or anything similar. Having Vulkan means they're master crafted too.

First of all, the inquisitors can't ride in the drop pods with the rest of your army so drop them; they'll die on foot. Back to your original list...

I think if you play a mission where you'll need to take and hold more than 2 objectives you'll be in trouble. I have no doubt that you'll be able to get first blood on a MC or vehicle, and I don't think 5 pods is too few. I like the grav but it may be tough to get within 9"... That's easy to bubble wrap against. I would stick to plasma for the range. Also, I don't like non combis on the Sternguard because you're dropping the special ammo that you're already paying for...

I would drop both vet sgt upgrades for the extra points, and would drop a few meltas to try and fill Vulkan's pod; the first wave is gonna be awesome.

Other than that, you don't have any anti air, so a stormtalon or two, or a Stormraven would be good.. But that depends on the meta in your area.

Ok, how about this. I'll gain an inquisitor, keep the same number of marines (ish) but also gain a Storm raven for anti air.....
