Here's a brief backstory on my new guard regiment, the Trench Runners. I will be adding a fan fiction about a single squad fighting during the siege of City 1, all from the point of view of a Sargent Moyle.

It was during the final moments of the Great Crusade that the world of New Terra was found, the Imperial Fists bringing the light of the Emperor to the industrially blasted world. But when they arrived they were not feared, and nor were they fired upon, instead the Imperial Fists found themselves under the admiration of the planet and it’s successful, if not corrupt, planetary government. The world of New Terra had known of the Emperor and his Great Crusade for some time, and had waited eagerly for his “Angels of death” to bring them into the Imperium of Man. The Imperial Fists found that the planets had been colonised not by any official colonial vessels, but instead by traders and businessmen. The world had been turned into one giant manufactorium, much like the Forge Worlds of the Adeptus Mechanicus, but instead of producing things required by the Imperium, they built products for sale, and had indeed been trading with nearby systems, using archaic sub light speed ships with crews that spanned generations. Once they had become part of the Imperium of Man the world changed drastically. The corrupt government of traders and con men was replaced my officials from the Imperium, and a planetary governor chosen. New Terra played little part in the Horus Heresy, only providing weapons and other supplies to the Imperial forces. As the heretical forces were pushed back and further from Terra the Imperial fists returned, demanding soldiers to fight for the Imperium, but the price for being a world of such industrial power as to rival the smallest of forge worlds was that the populous was spread thinly as it was, and there was no possible way even a single regiment of Imperial Guard could be created without drastically reducing the planets industrial power. Instead they pledged to supply the Imperium with everything they produced. Weapons, tanks, even the gargantuan warships of the Imperial Fleet were built on New Terra for the Imperium, representatives from the Adeptus Mechanicus being provided to oversee the production. This continued until late M39 when a war band of renegade space marines and chaos cultists attacked the planet. Nobody knew how they bypassed the planets defences, but suddenly uprisings were occurring across the planet, each one supported by power armoured monstrosities, each one a blue green in colour, and all appearing from nowhere. No ships landed, and only one city on the entire planet was spared. Around this city defences were hastily prepared as they waited for help from the Imperium. As they did so every able bodied worker was armed with the weapons and supplies produced in the city, and they manned the defences, waiting to be saved by a miracle, or eradicated by the so called “Alpha legion”. They had dug trench systems twenty miles deep that surrounded the city in the hope that they could hold back the renegade forces until reinforcements arrived. For three years the conscript forces of New Terra held their ground, pushing forward and being pushed back multiple times a day. They came to call themselves the “Trench Runners”, gaining a mile one day to lose 5 the next. Eventually support arrived in the form of two regiments of Cadian shock troops and a full siege regiment from Krieg. While the Death Korps tried to break the siege of New Terran forces, the cadian regiments assaulted the renegade help cities and compounds from the air, dropping in veteran forces and taking city after city over the next five years. When the Krieg siege regiment finally broke through to the New Terrans they found a force of harden trench fighters much like themselves, and together they pushed out from the city’s outskirts and joined with the forces from Cadia. After ten long, hard fought years the planet was clean of the heretical filth, and a new Regiment had been born. The New Terran 1st, also known as the “Trench Runners”. Due to the destruction caused by the renegades the planet never truly recovered its industrial might, but has since supported any Imperial attacks or defences with its trench veterans, each one hoping one day to claim vengeance against the “Alpha legion” for the destruction brought to their world.
