Wales: Where the Men are Men and the sheep are Scared.

Fair warning I haven't even looked at the rules yet so yes I am being a little lazy in requesting people who have already done the work to help me out.

I will be trading miniatures with a friend to pick up some Ariadna miniatures soon. Does anyone have tips on a decent small size list for a beginner to learn the game.

I am mostly going to pick up minis based on aesthetics and I really like the SAS models so would like a list containing those.

I also really like the emergency service miniature and the scouts miniature if they could be worked in some how.

Thanks

Carl

Do this, don't ask for a list.

Infinity is incredibly well balanced. You're not going to wind up with models that are bad, and when you're learning, you've got more important things to worry about than making a list that can complete objectives in ITS (objectives are the most important concern when making a proper list).

My general advice is - look on the official website at the models, and figure out what you like. Jump on the official army builder (on the main site, at the bottom, there's an option called Infinity Army), and play around with making about a 150pt list with the models you like.

Once you've got that 150pt list made of models you like, seek out others at your FLGS or amongst friends that play and play a few games with that list. Just get used to the order system, AROs, face to face rolls, etc.

Once you're comfortable playing the game, then look at expanding what you have for objective games.

Just figured I would ask what complements or helps round out the SAS guys.

Thanks for the advice, will certainly check out the army builder.

Infinity isn't really a game of synergies and combos. You're not going to find many cases of taking X to make Y better.

Interesting. Thanks for the information. How are snipers in the game btw? I love sniper models.

Snipers have their place. You're not going to want to fill out your SWC on sniper rifle equipped models, but taking one or even two if you really like them is definitely a valid option. They're good for locking down a long fire lane, and most of them come with ways to quickly get to or start in a good position (like camouflage, infiltration, climbing, etc).

Just remember when building a list not to get stuck in the 40k mentality. Spamming one unit that seems good isn't the key to victory. Finding a good mix of different units with different abilities and weapons gives you a more flexible toolbox to accomplish your objectives. Bringing a sniper is a good idea. Taking four isn't. The only unit you're likely to bring multiples of are your cheerleaders (basic rifle equipped line infantry whose main purpose is to sit in your deployment zone and hold the line). Most lists include a few cheerleaders, as they're cheap and generate orders for the more killy units in your list to take advantage of.

Thanks for answering my question. I appreciate it.

One more question. Can you use any mercs with any army? I want to grab the mushashi merc model.

Yes, there are rules for using mercs in non-tournament play. However, In tournament play, only certain armies, called sectorials have access to specific merc units. Qapu Kalqi for example, can take Druze and Yuan-Yuan. Musashi, and Yojimbo, are available to the Japanese Sectorial Army.
