Alright so....
First: does gunner work when shooting a primary weapon?
Second: when it says "attack", can that be primary? (Same question pretty much)
Last: when it says hit, does it mean hit while rolling for attacks or deal actual damage ("hit")?

Newer player, but have been stomped enough times to know what works and what doesn't as far as CSM go

Yes. "An attack" includes primary weapon attacks.

It means that you have uncanceled {explosion} or {hollow explosion} results remaining after all dice effects have been resolved. Essentially what it means is that unless you remove a shield token or deal a damage card you have failed to hit and gunner will trigger the second attack, with the exception being cases where damage is prevented or modified after dice are resolved. If, for example, your opponent uses "draw their fire" to take your only uncanceled die result on another ship the original ship is still considered to be hit by the attack even though it didn't receive any damage cards or lose any shield tokens.

There is no such thing as a hobby without politics. "Leave politics at the door" is itself a political statement, an endorsement of the status quo and an attempt to silence dissenting voices.

Notably there's a fairly counterintuitive counter play that can shut off the Han Solo/Gunner combo about half the time. If your playing Imperials, every turn you evade, or focus/evade with push the limit. Then when Han attacks for the first time in the round you use your tokens and defense roll to try and only take one damage even if you could stop all of it! That way he can't make a second attempt where you don't have a token or two to apply to your dice. Basically you let him ding you for one if you can help it so he can't beat you senseless for dodging. Can't tell you how many players I've seen walk right into his ability and go "HA! I use my token and dodge! Aww, he shot me again and I died" :,(
