Hullo there all,

I am looking into starting a small collection of FA for myself and my brother to tinker with,
We've pretty much decided to go with Sorylians and Dindrenzi fleets(Afaik) and was wondering if the frigate and corvette groups were a good starting point?
Any help with this would be much appreciated.

I'm relatively new to FSA, but I highly recommend the Battle For Valhalla starter set. Even if you guys don't do too much with the Terrans, its still a pretty good deal with everything that is in there. Plus, Terrans can be uses as an ally force for the Sorylians.

The Sorylian's strength really relies on their Teir 2/3 ships. The Dindrenzi have many effective options available to them, just make sure to protect your rear.

Make sure you guys play with enough terrain, 25% board coverage is what is recommended. Playing with less will give the Dindrenzi a sharp advantage as their Kinetic Weapons will wreck anything from across the board. The Sorylians will need to make judicious use of terrain and Shunt deployment to flank and hit the Dindrenzi in the rear.

I'd recommend the patrol fleets as the starting point (if you weren't getting battle for Valhalla) as they give you a really good core to build the rest of the fleet around. Each of the boxes is pretty balanced with each other.

In terms of expanding the groups I'd definitely recommend the corvette & frigate box set if only for no other reason than it will get you all the remaining compulsory T3 ships you'd need for most size games. I got the carrier group instead as the first expansion to my fleet and in the size games we're playing it doesn't get out as much as I'd like so need to get a frigate box to supplement it.

Like Zagman said, make sure you use enough terrain on the boards otherwise the Dindrenzi will be at a big advantage with their kinetic weapons.

Rightio, I may grab up either that starter or a pair of patrol fleets soon and thanks for the advice gamewise too, I was worried about the difference in ranges and didn't know if the long range vs heavy armour would balance out.

The differences in ranges shouldn't be too big an issue. In my games I've found the distances tend to close pretty quickly due to the ships compulsory movement (unless they've opted for a full stop) although I play aquans so tend to have a longer range than most of the sorylian weapons. Their higher than average CR should also help them weather the shots as the close.
