I've been a long time fan of 40k and fantasy, and although I've been able to sate my lust for battle with the Dawn of War series until now, the urge to build and assemble an army has finally overcome me, and I have come here for advice on where to start for my hopefully ever-growing army of dark eldar. I am familiar with all the rules and general tactics of 40k (I've been watching battle reports for years) but whenever I make lists I feel I let fluff get in the way of crunch, and sinking hundreds of dollars into a hobby I'll get crushed at doesn't seem smart. So I look forward to any advice you all could give me, as well as the beautiful models you guys show on here.

Hello and welcome to Dakka! With DE thankfully most of their possible builds are quite fitting with the background, raider spam, webway portal etc. Any specific type of army you want to build like kabal or cult?

You should probably keep all of your infantry in venoms and raiders.

I really like the wych cults and arena style combat they have, I was hoping to make a list kind of based off that. I realize wyches are all butt useless this edition, but I'm still going down that road with units like hellions.

Wyches still have their uses, tarpitting things like carnifex or a squad of TH/SS Terminators, killing vehicles via haywire etc. Something that is important to remember is to make sure to cover all sure bases when building a list, for example if I have a 5 man squad of Kabalite Warriors with a Blaster I usually get a venom to give them both anti infantry coverage while still allowing them to potentially kill a vehicle. You can certainly make a cult army, just make sure you are playing with proper terrain coverage, have built in redundancy in your list and understand what your units are capable of. EX: I typically have my reaver jetbikes pick off weaken units before maneuvering them next to my true target a vehicle and destroying it with a couple of heat lances.
