Hawk Wargames is releasing new plastic starter boxes - so for $55, you can start any of the original four factions. Resistance remains resin for the moment, as it's a new release, but I'm sure it's just a matter of time. $55 is an incredibly low entry point!

The is an Awesome price. The shocker that is going to be is when you want to upgrade your army. It's not cheap. Cheaper than GW that is for sure, but still not cheap. Only the Starter Sets are in plastic (or soon to be in plastic) but the rest of the army is still in resin, so will not be cheap.

True - but you need a lot less models than you do with Gee Dub. A blister or two can bolster a force pretty nicely depending on what it is.

I need to get two of these to add to my PHR, its actually a great way to build up a solid core army quickly.

You know, that is true. This got me thinking, GW was like that before as well. It will be interesting if and hopefully when Hawk Wargames become huge and everyone has the minis they want, what will Hawk Wargames will do then? Will they make the game bigger so people buy more minis and just end up in the same GW trap they have themselves fell in?
Question for every company out there is, how do you keep people buying once they have bought everything they need. I have a feeling for now, yes you don't need a lot of minis, but in the future, say 2 years from now or 10 years from now if it will still be a low model count game to play or if it will increase because people will like to play bigger and bigger games.
Problem for me is the armies I wanted to start were not in the box set. Went to buy the armies I wanted and was SHOCKED they were $100. EACH! So I am glad the plastics are coming out, but living in Canada, I am hoping to see a big difference in savings.

That sort of battle size creep doesn't happen with games this early in their life cycle. You won't have to worry about it for another 5 years. GW gets away with what it does because they have a large leftover audience of trapped gamers. DZC is a long way from being that big, and more importantly, there's a lot of competition already out, or coming out.
What happens more often is that you add units into the game that increase the variety, and that's where you get extra sales. Because this is a point based game, you can only fit so many models into the point limit, and playing the same army over and over gets stale. So the new units add new ways of doing things, or fill gaps in an army. We see this in the new UCM light tanks, the Scourge AA walkers, the PHR super-heavy walker with its ridiculous tail gun.
You can also make new factions, or sub-factions where you keep the starting costs low so that people can try out new armies for a low cost.

I can only hope that Hawk Wargames studies other companies and learns from their mistakes as opposed to making the same ones. My crystal ball is broken so i cannot see what they are doing in five years. So far I find they have been doing a good job of releasing new models for EACH faction and not just focusing on one.
I like the fact that they listen and are responsive to their player base. That is refreshing. I play games for fun - and as soon as it stops being fun I'm out.
The plastics will be nice. I hope that as they grow more models will be moved over to plastic. I plan to start PHR eventually even though people tell me I'm more of a glutton for punishment

If you are looking at starting an army,I'd suggest getting 2 of the starter sets in general - the extra drop ships alone are worth the price.
If you get the second starter, then all you need is the command vehicle, cards and at most 2 to 3 blisters to taste to reach 1500 points.
I think my UCM 1500 list I have, is basically just 2 starter sets plus Kodiak, 2 fighter planes, a squad of buggies and their light drop ships.
Job done.
Adding a heavy drop ship to your army also frees up 3 medium drop ships for future purchases when you go into 2k games.

Yeah, and if you are UCM you can proxy one of the extra Bears from the starter set as your Kodiak - which is what I did for a while

That's another handy thing with 2 starter sets for Scourge and UCM at least (and shaltari?).
2 starter armies gives you 2 extra bears, which could be used for a third infantry detachment or destroyers / snipers / praetorians etc.
