The trailer looked pretty cool, hopefully the game play stuff that comes out soon will bump me over the line and force me to pick this up.

Ew, that's not promising. He's going to try to make a movie and forget he's making a game. Directors are HORRIBLE people to put in charge of game development.

The people in the past who convinced themselves to do unspeakable things were no less human than you or I. They made their decisions; the only thing that prevents history from repeating itself is making different ones.

Trailer? You mean that lil movie that basically was a big "Play as Daryl Dixon"? I knew it was a Silent Hill trailer because the YT video title told me it was, I would never have guessed otherwise.

Here's a handy guide to telling if your new Silent Hill game will be any good:

Is the game being made by Japanese people? Yes/No

If Yes: It should turn out pretty good.

If No: It should turn out pretty bad.

This guide hasn't steered me wrong yet.

Emperor's Eagles (undergoing Chapter reorganization)
Caledonian 95th (undergoing regimental reorganization)
Thousands Sons (undergoing Warband re--- wait, are any of my 40K armies playable?)

The Room wasn't originally intended as a Silent Hill game, though. It was very late in development when it was decided to make it SH4. In the end, all they did was make one of the characters the father of the guy from SH2 and include some dialogue about the cult in the town. Otherwise it was really just about a psycho killer who had a bad childhood and became an imortal killy dude. When played as a stand-alone J-Horror game with no connection to SH, it's actually pretty good.

I will say I hated the ghost, so much hate for invulnerable monsters that chase and drain you.

And yet the lore somehow fits with all the creepy cult stuff.

In my opinion, Silent Hill(s) needs to get away from featuring the cult in every game. The town itself is the star of the show.

Basically the town exists as a way to show people what they really are and either the people will accept it and learn from it or remain in the hell of their own making.

To me Silent Hill has always been like the cave in Empire Strikes Back. The one where Luke notices something wrong about the cave and asks Yoda what's in there to which Yoda responds " Only what you take with you."

There's so many stories that could be told that doesn't involve shoehorning the cult into it. In fact Silent Hill 2, one of the most loved of the series barely mentioned the cult at all.

Hey. Hey, guys making the new Silent Hill game. You see this guy above me? Yeah, him right there. This man gets it. He gets it. You need to listen to him. Or hire him. Either way, do what he says. Then maybe your game will be good.

I imagine Delo Toro's role is more along the lines of designing the creatures and general tone/aesthetic of the game, rather than having an actual hand in developing the gameplay and intertwining it with the game's narrative.

However, the guy actually making the "game" part of it is Hideo Kojima... a guy who also makes movies instead of games.

So basically you're right.

I'm about half way through one. At work. During the day.

Still getting chills.

This looks awesome!

It gets even more nuts. Like, at some point the game starts to mess with you, Eternal Darkness style.

That was absurd. With the old school VHS tracking visuals and corrupted info? Insane.

Not quite. More like, even the options menu not being safe.
Though knowing Kojima, he might do something screwy with the hardware.

Psycho Mantis!

To be fairly honest, while Kojima might often do too much cinematic, what gameplay he has is usually quite good for a setting like Silent Hill, generally understanding peoples emotions and how to twist them a bit with his writing.

Oh wow...I called it.
At some point in the trailer / demo, the screen glitches out, like a graphical interference.

This new silent hill game is going to be nuts.

I mean, look at this!

They are totally doing Eternal Darkness! I love it

Oh, and the solution is just as nuts, and does indeed involve a hardware configuration.
They explain it at the end of the video.

I have every hope that with these names involved, the game will achieve the subtle atmosphere of Silent Hill 2.

Subtle? Practically everything was a manifestation of James guilt and sexual frustration. Pyramid head raping/destroying female legs isn't exactly subtle.

I disagree with the common internet interpretation that the monsters are all based on James sexual kinks.

Mainly due to a dev interview where he said the idea for the Lying Figure monster came from seeing one of his friends walking to the office in a hoodie, hands in his pockets, trying to be cool. Not to mention the female legs monster seems heavily inspired by the art of Hans Bellmer.

But mainly I meant the atmosphere is a slow boil, not a monster mash with guns akimbo

Oddly Kojima does have a subtlety to his work at times when he feels it needs it, there are a few times when you'll see massive mash with guns akimbo, but then you get to more emotional moments like with The Boss in 3, along with The End, and various other moments throughout the series.

Not to mention his game series have usually tried to avoid guns akimbo by punishing you hard in most cases.

Also I disagree with your disagreement, they all end up pretty well mixed with James thoughts on the matter when it comes to the monsters purpose/design, either representing parts of the town (The order's "Gods/Demons/Angels" Pyramid head or Valtiel with the rest of their religion) or based upon the protagonists issues mixed with the darker world of Silent Hill (The nurses representing the warped figure of Alissa's torment, or becoming 'sexier' when it comes to James warped view, the Abstract Daddy's being a view by Angela of her own rape).

Though I suppose a more quiet atmosphere would do it well, but in all honesty the only silent hill I haven't really enjoyed myself was 4 (Cursed Invincible ghosts!). They shouldn't be all the same, infact they should be more different from each other. After all none have the same experience as they head through Silent Hill.

Great. Nothing will help my immersion in the game world more than the developers reminding me that I am playing a game through the mechanism of 4th wall hardware re-configuration. Psycho Mantis was a gimmick that worked in a fight, but it pulled me right the hell out of the story. If Kojima is pulling a similar stunt in a SH game I will sit this one out, thanks.
