By far my top favorite champ is Shen. He's the first one I played when I started the game and I've played him on and off ever since. I can be serious with him or I can just troll (and still do half decent). Support Shen is truly fun just for the shenanigans that ensue. Same reason my second favorite is Vi (I hate AD carries and Vi is my preferred method of punishing them for all my suffering )
I'm also quite fond of playing Pantheon (Manleap!), Susan (Nasus), Gangplank, and Soraka. Someday I dream of Volibear being decent
Cho'Gath is my main guy. Him having a full 6 stacks of Feast is really great both game-wise and aesthetically since it's incredibly satisfying to wade in with a gigantic champion stomping and screaming as I initiate fights, especially with the Battlecast Cho'Gath skin.
Besides him the other favourite ones are Ziggs, Trundle, Doctor Mundo and Zac.
I don't actually play the game, but it has to be Mordekaiser. I have to love any character whose entire moveset has names ripped off from 80-90s metal songs.
Alternatively Malzahar, because Space AIDS.

Mordekaiser was so baws before the last set of changes. With the right build, he could crank out 1000 damage every 3 seconds to one target, while his passive ability takes 25% of the damage he does and turns it into a health shield; every three seconds he deals 1000 damage and gains 250 extra health, using only one move. I once tanked the entire enemy team, killed one of them, and ate three ultimates before they killed me. My team mopped up the rest.

Taric was absolute boss in season 2. If I remember correctly, in the competitive ladders he was the most played champion in the game (he and Sona appeared in nearly every match). Then they nerfed the armor passive on his W and he got replaced by Janna the next season. Now Braum is around and there's little reason to pick Taric over him.
Taric is also one of the few champions still sporting his release character model with the giant triangle feet XD Really want Taric, Nunu, and Blitz to get some models updates.

There's quite a swing in the meta depending patches, yeah. I have no doubt he was good at one point. Even Braum's starting to fall off with .14.
And if we're updating models, Pantheon needs love as well. In fact, that fether needs to get a right-handed skin so I can play him. Left-handed people confuse and frighten me.

He is right handed; Targan Soldiers use their shields as their primary fighting weapon.
Also, Pantheon is so fun to Goomba Stomp people with.
Morde also still has Triangle Feet :/

Yeah a lot of the G1 champs are way out of date. Taric and Ashe are so laughably poor there's little reason to pick them beyond liking them a lot. I still laugh at their inability to give Ashe a decent passive. They've redone that thing four times (I think Ashe has been reworked more than any other champion over the past 7 years). Annie had a brief return to awesome with the advent of support Annie. Veiger, Taric, and Sivir have been out of date for a long time. Heimer has never had much place in the meta (something they neglected in his rework) and the changes to the on-hit items really screwed Warwick and Kayle. Lots of the game's champions need reworks. And yes Fiora I'm looking at you too. You're a poor man's Yi and we all know it And poor Quinn and Sejuani. Both dead on arrival XD.
I hope that now that they're releasing fewer new champions we might see them going back and updating the people who really need it.

Yeah the thing I dislike most about Panth's model are his giant rectangle feet. He's got some amazing skins too between Fullmetal, Glaive Knight, and the Dragon skin.
Morganna, Udyr, and Kassadin could use the love too. I hate the really unnatural way their dresses move when they walk. It just looks so wonky compared to newer models.

It's not that they saw the shield as a primary weapon, but in a Phalanx formation, very delicate motor control is needed over the shield arm. Most humans favoring their right side, this meant the shield was held on the right side. Note that in battle a Phalanx tended to have their strongest soldiers on the right side for this very reason (it let them strike at the opposing line's left side), causing a battle over time to wheel counter clockwise.

The more you know!
Are you talking about actual real-world ancient hoplites? 'Cause I don't think I buy that either.

Yeah.
Read up on the Battle of Leuctra, where the Thebans did a total mind screw on Sparta by hitting the Spartan right side with the Sacred Band. Most commanders by that time had taken note that because of the way shields were carried in a Phalanx, the battle lines wheeled counter clockwise and organized their plans around that (basic point being to try and have you're right flank turn the opposing left). Thebes denied this to Sparta by putting their best soldiers on the Left, preventing the turn and the Spartan left side collapsed later in the battle.
EDIT: Though note this changed after later military reforms, as smaller shields were adopted as were larger spears and it became more feasible to use the dominant right side for wielding the spear. But this is the Hellenistic period Hoplite, not the ancient Greek.

I did a lot of classics stuff while pursuing my TOTALLY WORTH IT History BA, and I've never heard of them using the shield with the right hand. I'm utterly confused why the shield would require more fine motor control than the spear.
You ought to go update Wikipedia. It claims right-handed spear use at several different points. Though I'm still not sure I believe left-handed spear use.
Edit: And I always understood the Battle of Leuctra to have been a thing because traditional order of battle stuff was to put the most seasoned guys on the right and the greenest guys on the left, and the Thebans basically reversed that and added cavalry to the mix. I've never heard of it having anything to do with how the dudebros carried their shields.

The order of battle developed because of how the shield was carried. You put the strong guys on the right because a Phalanx v Phalanx fight involves a lot of man on man shoving, and you want the stronger and more veteran soldiers on the right to shove harder and rush the natural turning of the battle line.

I mostly play Support and Jungle, so my go-tos are currently Nami, Leona, and Braum in lane, and Vi (whose new skin is awesome) in Jungle. Working on getting the hang of Jinx and Caitlyn for when I get stuck ADCing, and strongly considering the joys of top Donger and Swaine.
When I'm stuck as ADC *shivers* I'm usually either Jinx or Varus. Varus because I can actually play him without being totally terrible, and Jinx because Jinx has some of the best lines in the game.
