Lost in time and space...

Hi guys!

Getting a bit tired of GW (not quitting, just want something more besides 40K) and looking for alternatives when I stumbled upon Deadzone. But before I some friends together to order a set there's a few questions you guys who play it might answer:

1) The Rebs look awesome and will probably be my major force, but how many points are in the starter? I know you play 70pts. games, but do I get enough? Do I get more so I can play diferent set ups?
2) When I'm on it, how many points do you get for the diferent factions? A friend of mine is Interested in Forge fathers, but all the teams look interesting in their way.
3) Is there any way to know which figures are any good besides buying them? are there a list somewhere pointing out their general strengths and weaknesses?
4) Is the game balanced? I can guess at some of the different factions playing styles (Enforcers: Shooty marines, Plague: CC-'nids) but is the game ballanced so a shooty faction doesn't always win or such?
5) Most importantly: is the game fun to play?
6) How are the campaign system? is it a good system? Or do you prefer one off games?
7) I'm thinking of getting the starter set, an extra terrain set and the Rebs box. Is that playable? Or should I plan on getting something else already?

Lot's of questions, I know... sorry guys, but any help is appreciated

Just got in at Gencon and only played a few games by myself, but here is my input:

1) you get 96 points of models, there are 4 other units you get cards for but have to buy the minis separately. So yes enough for some variety to play to different mission types.

2) Can only speak for Rebs and the starter box, its all I have. But expect around 100 points for each starter, with extra cards for extra models in every set.

3) Rebs - Get in-Get out - Recon, light in the shorts (except Teraton)
Enforcers - Hold / Capture, general ok all around
Plauge - Kill em all in melee - Tough
Asterians - Best shooters, light in the shorts
Mauraders, Most overall balanced, great units choices for any mission.
Forge - IDK

4) My impression so far is, just speaking on kill ability, if you play on a light terrain map, shooters excel, heavy terrain will see more melee thrashing. But, with the random mission mechanic, it throws it all together. You will have games heavily swayed to either side depending on team consist, missions drawn and map layout, you will also have ballanced games reguardless of the map layout. So if you are Rebs vs Plague, on a heavy terrain map and you both pull kill missions, I will stand back and salute the Rebs for their sacrifice for the greater good.

5) If you like MIni games, this is one of the best out there, very fun and thematic.

6) not tried campaign.

7) That is EXACTLY what I purchased at Gencon. Seems like plenty to have great games. I will say, the extra terrain is vital, as its a little light out of the box, light enough to give the plague a tough time of it unless you really spread the terrain walls out and make just "L" shapes all over.

It's all pretty much covered above, I'd second the suggestion for more terrain, and add that you don't immediately need to buy another set. If you can scratch build enough to add cover/block LoS in half a dozen cubes, that should see you through a few games. It won't add much height, but a few more barricades and barrels/containers go a long way towards evening the fight.

Rebs can struggle if they pull a kill mission against the likes of Plague or Enforcers, but aren't totally useless in a shootout. I won a game today by tabling a Plague player (didn't have the models left to win on VP), and they can spam Blaze Away like no one else with 4 point Humans.

It might be worth grabbing another Troops booster for more Humans and Yndij so you can run a higher model count list, which makes some missions easier (I find with just the starter it's sometimes too easy to lose models and make missions difficult/impossible).

I have about three complete forces for everything in the first 4 groups. All I can say is this: snipers. You want snipers. The rebel one is really obnoxious with her shield, and she has now been corrected to be a leader instead of specialist, and I typically run with 2-3 of her, plus regular grunts to claim stuff. They stay in the back and kill anything that harasses the crappy Chuck Norris wannabes. You can get 3 of them, 3 basics and a Grogan, if you'd like. Or 3 of them & 5 Chucks. You have options. But those snipers hurt people and are a royal pain to actually kill. Could be worse: you can run 5 gobbo snipers with ease.

Yeah, in Deadzone, missile launcher guys cry themselves to sleep because they're not sniper rifle guys.

Blaze away weapons. They haven an auto penalty because they're almost always on higher ground or in other cover. So blaze away and either get them kissing the dirt and/or eating bullets. A sniper lying on his belly isn't shooting you with a long-action weapon.
