What is the best base shape and size for RPG minis, specifically Pathfinder and D&D? Pathfinder uses a 1" grid, so the 25mm square fits nicely, but I think I like round bases.

It's hardly a high precision operation. Just use minis you like, if it more or less roughly fits on the grid you're fine. It's not like it's a game of warmachine or anything. Go with whatever looks good and brings your characters out. If you've got to slide them around a little awkwardly on the squares it's a small price to pay.

It’s not nearly as important if you are using a 1” grid. I think 1” round would be preferable, so if you need to twist a mini to get to to fit adjacent to another, there are no corners to get in the way. If you are playing a RPG that uses facing rules, square bases are better there, as there is no doubt about which way you are looking. But that’s not Pathfinder/D&D.

It might be worth picking up some 2” round bases, in case someone gets hit with an enlarge person. You can just take the mini on the small base and boost it up with the big one.

But if you have a cool mini on an oddly sized base, it’s not the end of the world.

Well, I was planning on rebasing a bunch of old miniatures I have on some ancient ruins bases for consistency. I was planning on using round bases, but figured I'd ask. Cheers.

Considering I have seen HEX and Square grid paper used for RPGs, I think Round is overall better.

Honestly it doesn't matter. Most RPGers I know seem to use everything from random dudes to empty bases and it drives me nuts as I am a mini painter.

I would do what you think looks the best... For me, that is round but for you could be square.
