I will also say that a lot of people who love tabletop games like them because they are tabletop games, not online.
That's indeed true, but if i look at my personal experience, and of many people i knew, with work, family and any other responsability you may face, it become harder and harder to find the time to get a full painted army and/or the time and place needed to organize a
TT game.
Not to mention many of us live in places where there's no Game Shop or community. I would not even mention how much cost prohibitive can be for some people.
This could be a way to live a similar experience with a lesser time commitment and a low entry barrier.
Hopefully this could lead to a renew interest in the real
TT experience as well.
I'm just going to go on a limb here and say that point 1 is a straight up yes. ... Trying to go for a middle ground without any established IP backing you seems like a bad idea.
This is something i'm definitely aware of, hence my question on the forum. We are looking to find something that can be interesting for new and veteran
TT players and making of it a new IP. It's not a small task, by any mean, but we are workhaolic and really committed to our vision.
And straight up aping 40k for setting is probably the worst idea of all. What reason will people have to explore your lore when they already have access to the countless amounts of pieces we have for 40k?
Try for something original, not ape something that is more popular on a different platform all together.
I may have been misunderstood. We don't want and we are not going to ape
40k, as i said we are goona inspire
loosely on it, but just for the atmosphere . We are not going to reskin and rename units , we are gonna work on our world. We are just looking for a dark sci fi setting, and
40k is the reference i think could better give a general idea of the atmosphere of the game we want. Mutant Chronicles would also be a nice reference in this sense.
I hope i made this point more clear.
This is more or less my feeling. I like the idea of an online TT game, dislike the idea of 40k-lite. If I wanted to play a 40k video game, I'd load up Space Marine or Dawn of War. It's a fun universe for what it is but it's distinctive enough anything aping on it would feel cheap and tacky. Certainly I wouldn't want rules based on 40k, mechanics-wise it's like the worst of the TTs game I've played and not by any small margin.
To maximize my interest the game should have it's own interesting setting. It should have models with very unique and varied abilties. I also want a solid single-player experience.
I hope to have answered to your doubt about the setting in the previous paragraph. For what concern the game system, it is totally made from scratch and won't take any rules from
40k or other tabletop, also because there're differences, no matter how hard we try, between a real
TT game and a virtual one, and we have to consider this as well while determining the mechanics and rules.
