So I'm a fairly new player to this game and I was playing a 35pt league battle over the weekend where we ran into something we couldn't quite find an answer to.

I had popped my feat on Madrak (Crusher) and was charging a unit of my opponents infantry. I forget the name of the unit but Menoth Weapon masters that give you the ability to sacrifice a different model with in 3" if you kill the one you attacked 1HP each 16 armor iirc.

So I charge with my first long rider targeting a model in the back of the unit measure distance and I do have range to it. So I move up my first Long Rider and stop when I go b2b with the 1st model I make contact with. Roll my impact hit and succeeded killing the model I impacted. (Note there were no other intervening models blocking the path to the target of my charge.)

He then chooses to sacrifice the target of my charge effectively keeping me from moving the extra few inches in. Here's where it got cloudy if he didn't kill the model he impacted with it would have been a failed charge, but he did kill it he just chose to take the target of my charge preventing me from following up. My argument was that I would not gain the normal charge attack against the model I was still in b2b with but would still have a chance to attack it because of the Crusher feat and if I did kill it with the crusher attack I would finish my move to what my intended target was and then have an effectively failed charge.

We ended up playing it like so that first Long Rider did kill the impacted model with it's Crusher feat attack finished I finished my charge to where the target of my charge was then ended that Long Riders activation.

Did we play it correctly totally f it up or something else?

Exemplars Errants are the models you are thinking about. And yes self sacrifice stops effects like crusher or berserk. The first errant (the one hit with the impact attack) was not killed and the other one was destroyed by self sacrifice not your attack so you would not get another attack from crusher.

I have ran into this before playing skorne, with pHexeris feat and Nihilator's berserk. Both are stopped cold by self sacrifice.

I dont have much experience running cav, but arent impact attacks simultaneous? Also, impact attacks (at least on a cavalry charge) hit all models within the mounts melee range (.5").

It's because there are 3 different steps of 'dead', with different things activating at different steps. I'm at work but if no one beats me to it I'll give you a better explanation this arvo.

I wish I had time for all the game systems I own, let alone want to own...

The steps of "death" are disabled, boxed, and then destroyed.

Self-sacrifice triggers on disabled. As does Tough.

Crusher IIRC triggers on destroyed. So anything which stops the steps at Disabled or Boxed will stop Crusher.

If Crusher simply granted you an extra attack, like eKreoss's feat does, then nothing would stop it.

Self-proclaimed evil Cat-person. Dues Ex Felines

Cato Sicarius, after force feeding Captain Ventris a copy of the Codex Astartes for having the audacity to play Deathwatch, chokes to death on his own D-baggery after finding Calgar assembling his new Eldar army.
