Developed by the brilliance behind Wing Commander....it has raised $55,000,000 so far through crowd-funding.

With as intense as these graphics look and the sounds of how resource hungry a game like this will be....

I am always wondering just what type of systems these freaking games are even developed on! I mean...is there some HAL-9000 like (sans the homicidal tendencies) uber computer that mere mortals can only fathom....?

This isn't exactly news now is it?

That said, yeah, it is shaping up amazingly.

Glad I threw some 200 bucks at it.

It's news that they've raised $55m though, right?

Eh, I guess. Not gonna be surprised if it reaches 75m before release.

Isn't the guy who founded the program some previous developer with lots of clout? I wanna say the guy who created Total Annihilation, but I'm probably off.

Either way, before this get's too far into launch, I'm going to have a founders pack, I guarantee it.

Yes, though he has over-promised and under-delivered in the past, too. What worries me a bit about SC is that it still looks more like a huge PR event than a game in the making, and they still don't really have a lot to show except for Arena Commander and a racing minigame.

On the other hand, they've managed to collect a ridiculous amount of cash, allowing Roberts to bring aboard a score of other studios to help with the ever-expanding feature list of his vision, and they still have many years of development they can invest into fleshing out the product. I believe there's a lot of potential here, and with that huge a budget I am tempted to say that total failure is out of the question. I think the biggest concern is whether the many puzzle pieces of the different studios working on the project will seamlessly fit together to form the greater whole, and how much of a limitation the engine they've chosen will turn out to be (especially in terms of map size and boundaries). From what I've heard, there is also a bit of controversy regarding the flight model and lack of support for VR and custom keybindings, but these are things that can easily be remedied in the future, once the studio(s) begins tweaking such details. On the plus side, you can already see that it looks stunning, in terms of visual detail.

In closing, the core experience of Star Citizen looks to be "more of the same" in comparison to older Wing Commander titles, and people who enjoyed those will probably have a lot of fun in SC as well, at least once it gets closer to release.
