Syntherion has found himself with a nice gap in melee to zap High Reclaimer (try to imagine they're PoM figs. I just recreated it with my own Khador ones (MoWs are Bastions, WG are Errants and eVlad is Reclaimer). ) with Convection. You have clear LOS, no intervening models, you aren't channeling...it looks to me like you played it correctly.

That is correct.

Spells only suffer the in melee penalty if casting at an enemy model that is in melee, but not in melee with the caster of the spell. Otherwise, no restrictions.
