Hi all,
Figured this forum would be a good place to start for a noob. Im thinking about either starting a WoodElf army or a Necron army. WHFB seems more popular here but I am a huge scifi freak and Necrons just whisper sweet sweet nothings in my ear lol. Im a Warmachine/Hordes player but have played Infinity, STAW, Malifaux. Im a reasonable painter imo but am pretty lazy with it. Dip!! I feel the one thing that will be the most difficult for me is learning the rule sets. With all the other games I play I'm sure I'll mix some things up. Mainly being phases, magic , moving shooting ect. Well, hope tobe picking through posts. Also, any input on which system I should pick? Playing in Calgary out of myth games usually.
Cheers,

I only play 40k. It seems like WHFB has better rules and is less prone to power lists and other things that ruin 40k but I just love the 40k setting.
I've been thinking about getting into fantasy for a while but none of the factions appeal to me.

Welcome to Dakka! Necrons were my first army, ever. Though, I started about two years before the big update. They went from "meh" to "solidly competitive".
Since there's another codex update coming in January of next year, I'd advise holding off on buying that or any Cron stuff yet. Meantime, get the main rulebook (the small version, that is), and learn the main rules for now. It'll take awhile, but you should have plenty of time to decide if you still want Necrons or some other army.
I'd also say to go to the Lexicanum website to learn more about 40K armies and their fluff, see if that influences your decision.
Don't play Fantasy, so I can't help there.

Well, if you choose to start necrons now, you will only be out $35 for the codex, because the current one is paperback and cheaper. Your choice.
Personally, I never start an army without the codex, its just full of ideas for armies and paint schemes. Gives you a solid idea of what kind of army you want to start with.
Necrons are an excellent starter army-- they are easy to paint, and easy to play. They play like space marines, with a little more durability, and a little better shooting ability. But they generally suck in melee. The only issue I have with them is they are fiddly to assemble, and easy to break.
Wood Elves, on the other hand, are one of the harder armies to learn to play in WHFB, and significantly harder to paint. I cant tell you much more atm, I dont play them.

Hi there.
Having no-one to play against is a big reason not to start a game. But, if you have the opponents, read up, ask around, and grab a sample box of stuff you like the look of. Even if you mess up the painting, you might decide not to use them anyway.
But, Necrons are expecting a new codex fairly soon, and paperback will be flying towards the bin to grab a free copy, maybe.
