Ok, so I've been reading the 40k books for some years now and have read like 4 of the HH books. I was just wondering if somebody could save me some time and give me a list of maybe the 5 best books, or rank the top 10 HH books, or something like. Just tell me which ones are worth reading. Preferably in a list manner so that I know which to read first.

To quote a fictional character... "Let's make this fun!"

There was a story in the SM omnibus where a single kroot killed 2-3 marines then ate their gene seed and became a Kroot-startes.

We must all join the Kroot-startes...

Well the important question is how tied are you to the original telling of the Heresy? Do you believe that the Heresy consisted entirely of Istvaan III -> Istvaan V -> Terra with Prospero, Calth, and Signus thrown in? If so, then the list is as follows:
Horus Rising
False Gods
Galaxy in Flames
Fulgrim
The First Heretic
Thousand Sons
Know No Fear
Fear to Tread (barely, and only if you're not too invested in the Blood Angels)
Betrayer
Scars

If you have no ties to the older material and want the more expanded story, then it's easier to list books that aren't worth reading. These would be in no real order:
Battle for the Abyss
Descent of Angels
Fallen Angels
Nemesis
The Outcast Dead
Deliverance Lost
Vulkan Lives

However, there are also dozens and dozens of short stories, novella, and audio dramas that fill in a lot of details. Some of the best being:
The Crimson Fist
Iron Within
The Serpent Beneath
Butcher's Nails
Savage Weapon
Prince of Crows
