I think they're still decent models. However, unlike their LotR predecessors, they don't really resemble the actors anywhere near as much. The Gandalf, Thorin and Bilbo from EfGT do, as well as some of the others in that set, but the newer ones as a whole don't.
I wonder if it has anything to do with the Perry's leaving GW, their sculpts were usually the best.

Considering there were originally only going to be two Hobbit movies I would venture to say these sculpts are over a year old.

It's really impossible to tell until you see them in the flesh. On models of that scale the paint job is everything and GW don't really give it a high end paint job to know. I haven't bought any recent LOTR models to know, but I know some of the older ones I bought didn't look like the actors very much when I saw the painted models in a book, but the raw unpainted models actually looked very much like the actors.... it's just very difficult to paint them in a way that does them justice. From what I've seen of the new Hobbit stuff (noting I don't actually own any)... they are more than detailed enough to be beyond my painting skills to actually care about any flaws.

Again, the hobbit models this week looked rushed... (the paint job at least) So I dont know if it is the sculpt or painting

I've been in the LOTR since 2001 and the figures did resemble the actors/characters in the movie, but it seem that after the Return The King, the figures changed. they just didn't look like them.

i think if your a tolkien fan, get em.
i myself am massing a collection, have not played yet (though i havent really tried) but whateva you have you can use,its a warband game, even if support stops, there nothing they can release that they already havent, this isnt warhammer, this is lotr, gw have already made up afew charectors and models and thats fine but once support stops ebay will be your only chance and that an be abit arduous i find, i plan on getting asmuch as i can so i can re enact scenes from the books (probs not the hobbit as much, if i did i wouldnt use the hobbit line, a pack of dwarf warriors and a dwarf lord will do me) and maybe from the silmarilion, but in the end, i want the charectors and units from the books i love, and if i can get a game in every so often great, dont fail do get into a game because hardly anyone or no one plays it, you might get lucky

After the Return of the King, GW got the rights to do figures based on the book as well as the film, so they no longer had to make figures that looked like actors, the could make figures that were interpretations drawn from the book. This explains the different faces (doesn't really explain why they all continued to be dress just like they were in the movie).
