I think it depends. Zombicide, though it has miniatures, is a board game. There are also Zombie themed miniatures games (played on a terrain board like you would use for 40k).
Zombicide does seem to be a popular board game, though folks who did not get involved in the kickstarters often lament the KS exclusive figures and the prices they get on Ebay. So finding opponents won't be too hard.

I love Zombicide.
But it's quite simple, and rather random. It's cooperative, and I've never played a coop game that had a great AI. But the fact that it's got tons of expansions means you won't be stuck with the same ol' game for long: you can buy more stuff to freshen up the game once you're bored.
I also like Last Night on Earth, which is a vs game (i.e., it's the survivors vs. the zombies. Good fun!). Like Zombicide, it's also got lots of expansions. The art style is much different: with photos and actors rather than drawings. This was weird at first... But I got used to it pretty quickly.
Both are good, fairly light, fun thematic zombie games. There are quite a few others too, those are just the two I've played.
I'd recommend reading some reviews of both games over at boardgamegeek.com (sorry, can't link to it while I'm at work, but it's easy to find!) and see which one might be something you'd like. Though bgg isn't the easiest site to navigate, once you get used to it, you'll be able to search on every game with zombies in it...

IMO, Yes.
I thought Zombie 15' was also very good, but it's a completely different game and is much more shallow.
Zombies!!! is garbage. Lazy mechanics for an overall lazy game.
Last Night on Earth is meh. The Flying Frog dice mechanic is a bit boring, and I hate the "art style" of photographs. It isn't bad, but Zombicide is better.
On of my buddies swears by Dead of Winter. It's a co-op with a traitor mechanic. I've only heard good things, but it's impossible to find right now, apparently.
If I'm getting one, it's Zombicide.
If I'm getting two, it's Zombiecide and Zombie 15'.

Out of the above I've only played LNoE and Zombicide! I enjoyed both, but they're very different - as mentioned - vs and co-op.
Zombicide is indeed very random, but if you can handle that, it's great. Our last game we had 3 Aaargh! search cards, 2 manholes and the Abomination in out first 5 turns - and a second Abomination 2 turns later, after managing to luckily get the parts to molotov the first.
So we were screwed from the outset, and knew it, but decided to play on regardless. That's the beauty of Zombicide, even though sometimes you can tell you're screwed, you play on and the randomness manages to actually create a really "cinematic" experience (insofar that it's a board game). We then did the mission again after getting destroyed, and won it the second time around.
