Hi all,

I've recently started playing Man O War, and now I'm hooked! Thing is, it's really hard to get hold of ships without spending a fortune, so I'm considering scratch-building.

At this scale it's pretty tricky. I want to do an Empire fleet, and I'd really like to make the ships a bit more realistic and detailed than the ones you could buy - more like the artwork and concept sketches than the actual figures.

Does anyone have any tips or websites for building little fantasy ships? I'm pretty good at modelling and fine detail work, but rather poor at sculpting. I just don't know where to start!

Cheers

Unfortunately, my best advice is lost, along with the old board. But I'll try and salvage some of it.

Don't scratch-build. For realistic-looking ships (Elves, Brets, Empire), there are quite a few appropriate miniatures already out there.

I'll refer you to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scale_model#Model_ships_and_naval_wargaming for a little history lesson on waterline ships.

IIRC, Man o' War was simiarly to 1/2400 scale. You won't get as much obvious size variety in your ships (real sihps didn't vary by quite as large a margin), but you can easily put together a very nice-looking fleet with a little bit of web work.

It's a great game. GW should re-release it, and just make new figures. People would eat that stuff up.
