I was looking for a good LotR army to start off with (good as in not evil) and I decided on the free people's. Don't really know where to start though. I really liked the look of the Hobbit Militia and the Hobbit Archers as I wanted quite a Hobbit orientated army, but I don't know how good or strong these guys are. I also wanted to know what would be a good starting point for a Free People's army. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Welcome to HMS Sinking! Jokes aside this is a great game with a lot of support so you will defo have fun.

As for Hobbits, I absolutely love them and would love an army of them. They have fantastic models, cheap points and fun rules, and have some deadly combos. The only downside is that they are an expensive ££££ army to collect to an appropriate size. That said, one warband can make effective allies.

A good army to start with would be elves: good stats to be forgiving and expensive points to limit the number of models on the table so you don't get confused easily! Again can be expanded into very fun and/or competitive lists and provide opportunities for awesome conversions and paintjobs. There is also a wide choice of elf with a range of different heroes, so they are very versatile depending on what sort of play style you want: high elves with heavy armour and beasty heroes; Galadhrim with mediocre armour but pretty cheap with more elite choices and cheaper heroes, also more spammable; wood elves are cheap, spammable, and very effective at shooting stuff and being a right pain in the arse with a range of heroes and fun elites; new Mirkwood Rangers have fun rules and heroes and can form some nasty alliances, though many people don't like them... They are all normally quite easy to pick up on eBay (heroes mainly) but some are more available than others and prices vary.

Hoped this helped! Any more questions or if you want breakdowns on any other races feel free to ask away.

Happy battling!

All hobbit armies are very expensive and very hard to find as the shirrfs are OOP....BUT they are very competitive and a strong army simply because 100% of your army can throw stones and you have numbers similar to goblin armies(if not more). The issue comes in when you want to play larger games the single most points you can make by taking every single upgrade possiable is 702 points and that is 84 models. I would ofset that by bringing in gandalf to get up to the 750 we usually play or bringing bilbo with an ent or eagles. Hobbits are powerful by the shear volume of magic resistant/stone throwing/shoot value 3+ hobbits
