Ok I have to Space Marines, Daemonhunters, and Imperial Guard Codexs. Im going to come up with a Blood Angels Army, Daemonhunter Army and Imperial Guard army before I buy any models and see what you guys think so i dont waste any money. Before I do so though what units should I stay away from and which are musts in these three armies? Thanks.

Ok I also got the necron book so the above questions for a necron army too

I understand that Scissors can beat Paper, and I get how Rock can beat Scissors, but there's no f'n way Paper can beat Rock. Paper is supposed to magically wrap around Rock leaving it immobile? Why the hell can't paper do this to scissors? Screw scissors, why can't paper do this to people? Why aren't sheets of college ruled notebook paper constantly suffocating students as they attempt to take notes in class? I'll tell you why, because paper can't beat anybody, a rock would tear that gak up in 2 seconds. When I play rock/ paper/ scissors, I always choose rock. Then when somebody claims to have beaten me with their paper I can punch them in the face with my already clenched fist and say, oh gak, I'm sorry, I thought paper would protect you, you donkey-cave.

Well, unless you're independently wealthy and like painting A LOT, pick one army and stick with it to begin with. My shed is filled with 1/2 completed armies (GW put their kid thru college on me). The best way to do this is to buy a bag o' bases and proxy fight with some of the armies with a willing volunteer, and find out which one you like playing best. Maybe then we can narrow it down for you.

I can kick this off by saying that unless you have a mean masochistic streak in you, stay away from Imperial Guard.

what NOT to have in your army?

that really depends on what you as a person and player like in your army. some people will swear marine snipers are useless, others will swear by their effectiveness either because of how thier army is designed or how they like to play.

it is a points based wargame. once you get your required HQ and 2 troop choices filled you can swing your army towards fast, elite or heavy choices...or just go with lots of troops. it is really up to you.
