Hello all,

I'm still relatively new to wargaming (4 months), having been a long time RPGr, and a friend of mine suggested I check out both 40K and DakkaDakka. I'm learning the ropes of the hobby with Warmachine but I love the look of 40K. I live in a relatively secluded part of Scotland so my main opponent will be my wife who routinely kicks my @ss at most games.

I do have a couple of questions about 40k though. Sorry if this is the wrong place...
1. What size of army do people generally start with?
2. I see a load of books/supplements but do I need to buy them all? How about just the rulebook and a codex?

See you on the boards

Hi there!

To respond to your questions: I believe about 500 points is enough for a decent, quick game of 40K. And because of the sheer cost of all those various rulebooks/codexes, etc, I've started off with the Dark Vengeance box set (because you get a rulebook and all the dice/templates, etc), as well as the two codexes for my own little armies, Chaos and Tyranids. As a recent beginner, I reckon start with the bare essentials (being Dark Vengeance first and then whatever relevant codexes for whomever you want to collect), and accumulate knowledge as you go. Otherwise, everything would be way too much to take in in one go!

Best of luck whatever you decide to go with.

Great advice Funbug No.1, thank you!

Is there a "faction" guide anywhere? Like a blurb on each army?

You're most welcome, dude!

Personally, for basic background info, I like the Lexicanum - http://www.lexicanum.com/ , which has enough to give you an authentic 'feel' for each faction, since the fluff there's from official sources.

As far as rules go, I have no idea. 1D4Chan ( http://1d4chan.org/wiki/Main_Page ) is funny and gives you tactics for each army, so I suppose you could use that to help inform decisions as to which faction to go with. It is a bit NSFW, though.

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka
