Dan Verssen Games (DVG) Is launching a Kickstarter for our new Valkyrie game the first week of April.

I'd like to talk about it, and get your feedback for how to build the best game and community possible. My goal is to not only have a great game, but to also have the supporting art and world fiction to make this an amazing game setting that everyone can have fun in.

VALKYRIE - First look at the vehicle cards!

I had the pleasure of working at Alderac Entertainment Group (AEG) for a year or two back around 1998. I was designing the 7th Sea CCG, and I had the opportunity to work with the writers as they developed the fiction, lore, and history for the 7th Sea world.

I was able to see firsthand the impact their work had on the game. The card game grew from just being game mechanics on cards to being a fleshed-out world, that the cards lived in, and the players cared about.

I've never forgotten that lesson.

It is my hope to bring that same richness of story to Valkyrie's world. Right now, writers are hard at work bringing Valkyrie to life, and as time goes by I hope to have more writers, more stories, more adventures, until we are able to provide players with a living world deserving of their epic battles.

The Valkyrie Kickstarter for our new giant robot game launches on April 7th. Valkyrie is a miniature board game with plastic figures for giant robots, vehicles, infantry, and terrain pieces.

Valkyrie is a fast-paced miniatures board game played on a map for 2 or more players. Each game takes roughly 15 minutes to set-up and 1 to 2 hours to play.

It is with great pleasure that I can announce that famed science fiction author Daniel Keys Moran​ has agreed to write a story for Valkyrie! Thank you Daniel!

It was suggested to us by the people on the Miniatures Page that we go with an established scale, such as 1/285th. We ordered a test 3D printing of a few vehicles to see how they would look, and they arrived yesterday. We're going to play a few games with the new miniatures and see how they work. We should know in the next 24 hours.

It's suggestions like this can that really improve a game and make it a perfect fit for people. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions, please post them.

VALKYRIE! - Why this is the miniatures game for you…

The game is easy to learn. I mean, really easy to learn. This means you can spend all your time playing. In Valkyrie, you spend your time being smarter than your opponent, instead of worrying what you can and cannot do.

Deciding what to do in the game is the real challenge. Knowing how to do it, is not.

If you have a force that is in range of an enemy force, you can shoot it. There are no line of sight rules, no firing arc rules.

By 2050, there are enough satellites above the battlefield to let me know where the enemy is – even if he is hiding behind that hill.

Firing Arc rules? When the world has enough tech to build giant, walking mechanized battlefield weapons, I’m going to assume they can swivel around and shoot at whatever they want to.

Your Valkyries can move, shoot, aim, or prepare each turn. In fact, they get to choose any two each time they act. Do you want them to move and shoot? Aim and shoot? You get to choose any two things for them to do.

Likewise, your ground units (Artillery, Tanks, Infantry and Transports) get to choose two actions.

Your US M1 Abrams Tanks have a movement of 5 and a range of 6. They usually move into the middle of the battlefield and attack anything that gets in their way.

Your Stryker or BTR-80 transports can move 6 hexes. Your Infantry can only move 2 hexes. On the upside, your transports can “pick-up” your infantry and freely move them 6 hexes. What a nice way to get your infantry into a good position to participate in the battle. On the down-side, if your transport gets hit while the infantry is being transported, they are both destroyed.

The map is 20x18 hexes. Your US Paladin Artillery force has a firing range of 15 Hexes, and a movement of 3, so it can shoot at almost anywhere on the map. Most often, the force will not move. It will Shoot and Aim. Aiming means you can re-roll any of your attack dice.

So why would an Artillery force EVER move? This brings me to Terrain. Just a little away from the front of your Artillery force, you might have a Ridge Line. If a force can get into a Ridge Line, it will gain an additional attack die. That's a huge motivation to lose your Aim for a turn and move that Artillery into the Ridge Line. Unfortunately, for each benefit of a Terrain, there is also a cost. Being in a Ridge Line terrain makes your force very easy to see and hit. In fact, they lose a defense die by being in the Ridge Line terrain. It reminds me of the Hobbits cooking sausage on Weathertop. Dangerously visible.

You know a great place for a transport, loaded up with infantry to end its turn? In a Tree Line Terrain. This is the opposite of a Ridge Line terrain. You gain 2 additional defense dice but you lose an Attack die. The trees don’t make you harder to find (we still have those satellites), but it does put a lot of trees in the way of an incoming cannon shot, making it much harder to kill you.

Cities are a great place. When you move a force into a city, you get to claim 5 victory points at the end of every future turn for as long as you hold the city. However, there are tall buildings and winding streets that not only keep you from being fired upon while you are in a city, but will also keep you from firing at anyone outside the city for as long as you are there.

If you want to take a city that already has a force in it, you have to move one of your forces into the city and attack from range zero. If you win, the enemy force is destroyed. If you do not destroy the enemy force, your force is bounced out of the city to wait for another turn.

So, do you attack the enemy ground forces, or focus on the enemy Valkyrie? Do you move everyone as close as possible, or scatter into the surrounding terrain? Do you run for an enemy Forward Base (taking an enemy base immediately wins you the game), or do you try to eliminate enemy forces (another way to win).

At the beginning of the game, you, and your opponent get to choose the battle point value and spend that value on any forces you want. Do you want all infantry, mostly tanks, lots of artillery, or a nice combination of ground forces and Valkyries?

…and just to add more depth to the game, there are Tactics cards to purchase. They cost about as much as a force, but will give you a mid-battle advantage or benefit.

Would you like to put a Pilot in your Valkyrie? One with skills uniquely focused on your personal battle style? Sure, but it will cost a few more of your points.

If you go on too much of a shopping spree, you can end up with too few forces (that are amazing) but can’t hold back the barrage of attacks coming toward it.

Everything in the game is designed to be easy to learn, but add depth and challenge to the battle.

Battles can take as little as 45 minutes!

If you can’t find an opponent to play with, there is an amazing Solitaire system designed into the game. You don’t need to learn any new rules. The system will play against you, with intelligent moves that will drive it toward the same winning conditions that you have.

Valkyrie is easy to learn, but challenging and exciting to play. Now come see all the amazing art and miniatures!

It started great, but then completely flat lined.
