Hey I've recently started being interested in building an Imperial Guard army and playing WH40k

However. Before I purchase any units at all I was wondering if anyone could help me out in answering a few questions and/or helping me in building a fairly
decent but starter 1000 point army.

I've looked up some other 1000 starter armies but all of the extra text confuses me (as simple minded as I am).
For e.g. it will say things like

HQ- Veterans with heavy bolter,flamer,2x etc...

Now I realize that refers to the weapons and squad type, but it would help a ton if anybody familiar with IG could possibly start from the top up
and give me a very basic run down of the actual troops I need to purchase as a whole, and then finally go into what weapons and extras will be added to meet the
1000 point mark.

Any help will be high highly! appreciated.

Welcome to Dakka, great to see another kiwi on the boards.

Creating any army now is made easier with unbound rules. What ever you want to bring you can! Personally however I am a fan of following the old traditional format, starting with an HQ choice and two troop choices then expanding from there.

Sadly I don't own a copy of the IG codex so unit wise I can't offer much advice, however having played against them I can say they have some must have units such as the quad mortar tanks (the name eludes me) and plenty of chimera's with melta gun veterans inside.

Been thinking of giving my IG a jump start this year also. Idk about you but three Cadian battle forces gives you a a CCS, 2 PCs, 6 infantry squads, 9hw teams, 3 chimeras and 3 leman Russ... I'd start with that and them mech up a little later. I haven't scored the Dex yet to do I'm pretty sure that would over shoot 1k right off...

I do not play IG, but I see some other people do.

Now that I have a minute to think about it, I've been reading a lot of lists and since I used to play guard back in third and will again soon.... Well.

You have roughly three ways to play. Gun line, mechanized, and foot slogging.

IMO, to spread your spending out and get a little practice in you could start with a small foot slogger army, then mechanize it later with chimeras since you will already have the bodies to fill them. Or load up on artillery for a stand and shoot strategy.

The squad kits nowadays have everything you need in them... Oh how lucky y'all all are... I had to buy metal plasma and melta gunner's back in 04...

Unless you play black Templar space marines... Then none of the boxes have what you need and you gotta go kit bash crazy...
