Now I've been using the 30k crusade army list for a while now and absolutely love the mass tactical squads you can use. But I want to know if the breaching squads are a viable unit as I want to make a Roman style shield wall for my legion. Would this be worthwhile or would another 20 man tactical squad perform better overall?

I like 20 man tacticals with an apothecary. I am not sold on the breachers even if they fit the fluff for my IW.

I'd also say Tacticals with Apothecary. Boarding shields are pretty mneh to be honest.

There are, IMO, two answers to your question:

1) If you want that shield wall bad enough, then take the Breachers- you'll probably have more fun with them.

2) If you want to maximize the capability of your list, then Tacs are probably a better choice.

Other thoughts: 20-man Tacs with an Apothecary are nice, but suffer from one, incredibly important flaw:

They only fit in Spartan Assault Tanks.

Now, if you're going to footslog them, then yeah, this doesn't matter. But if you want to throw them into a transport, and still get the Apothecary, then you'll need to either bring:

1) A Spartan in HS, which is suboptimal due to all the other amazing and more generally useful HS options
2) Pay a 10-man Termi tax and then have the Tacs jack the Spartan, which is also suboptimal (and you might as well actually invest in the Termies too)
3) Take 19 Tacs instead of 20, and then add the Apoth.

Option 3 allows you to then throw the squad into a Storm Eagle or a Kharybdis Assault Claw. Now the Kharybdis does have the same issue as bringing as Spartan- namely that it's only really being used to bring a big blob of bodies that aren't the killiest thing around, but it does allow them to be dropped anywhere on the board, potentially Turn 1.

FA isn't nearly as crowded, so a Storm Eagle offers a fast-moving aircraft. You'll not really want to bring more than one Tac squad in this fashion though, as FA is also where Xiphons and Primaris Lightnings are, and those are some of best anti-air the Legion list has (Deredeos and Mortis Contemptors are also included as "amazing AA").

FA also has Legion Jetbikes, which are badass.

Which Legion do you play? If you really like the Breacher squads, the Imperial Fists have an improved version.

I'm world eaters, so not exactly fitting with the fluff but I wanted them to be a group of veterans from the old War Hounds legion.
And I'm still probably going to do the shield wall, but if another tactical squad in either a Spartan or storm eagle will perform better, then I think it'll just be a ten man squad rather thAn the full 20 man unit. Cheers for replying guys!
