Its a medium tank rather than an MBT, 48 tons isquite a lot lighter than most MBTs of today, and the tank has a big gun. 125mm, as opposed to the standard of 120mm.

Its also very fast. Russia is trying to change the game of tank design away from heavy armour protection. Feasible as the main tank killer now is from air power.

It's a smart move. The old maxim of "if you can see it, you can kill it" springs to mind. We'll see if it does everything it says on the tin. It will be interesting to see what the logistical tail for the T-14 looks like.
