As is the tradition of MechaniCon, we will continue to offer a weekend of gaming for lovers of the Warhammer 40,000 universe. This year we are changing our event from a multi-game convention to focus on the 40K Grand Tournament. The 40K GT will host 50 players on Saturday and Sunday and our club will run our familiar side events including BFG, Epic, the Friday Night Fight, and open gaming. Late night gaming is always part of the fun so bring your favorite game to show off or join in some of the ones we have. The Chris Bledsoe Memorial Fund Raiser will be held on Saturday evening and will once again raise money for cancer research.

MechaniCon Grand Tournament Rules:

The final rules pack will be out in the early summer - for now you can refer to the outline based on this year's Throne of Skulls events.

Warhammer 40,000
1875 point Armies
All models must be fully painted and based
5 Rounds of Games - 3 hour rounds
Army Selection – Battle Forged or Unbound - no event restrictions
All rules for 40K including GW, WD, BL, and FW – no Horus Heresy
Official GW and FW FAQs only!
Final release date for new rules is September 26

Not really. Last year we had a nice range of army types and our only restriction was Battle-Forged (which we followed from the Throne of Skulls format). This year we are adding Unbound armies to the army construction format as well. If it is good enough for the events at Warhammer World it is good enough for us!

There may be some restrictions on long out of print Imperial Armour army lists but common sense will apply to all individual units such as: Astra Militarum = Imperial Guard

Last year everyone seemed really well self regulated. There wasnt a single Eldar army at the event. It's too early to tell if I can make it due to work but hopefully I will, I had a blast last year.

Nice to see it back to a hotel. You can grab a beer and sandwhich at some point in a game.

....and lo!.....The Age of Sigmar came to an end when Saint Veetock and his hamster legions smote the false Sigmar and destroyed the bubbleverse and lead the true believers back to the Old World.

Heading down to this for the Epic tourney, so an Epic army will be in tow.

If anyone's interested in a pick-up game/demo I can also bring my Wrath of Kings, Warmaster, Necromunda or Man o' War stuff.

I'm thinking about checking this out, but I know little to nothing about the event.

Is it OK to come and just look around or is it best to only come if participating?
Will I need to purchase an open gaming ticket or similar to look around? I ask because I generally don't carry cash on me, but I'll make sure to have some if I need to purchase a ticket.
Is there a vendor hall to purchase stuff?

I'm just trying to get a feel for this "event". If it's a "con" or really just a tournament. Thanks for any info you can provide.

Its definitely more of an event. Last time there was stuff for sale, but not a ton and definitely nothing I'd go out of my way to go see if I werent at the event already. The event, however, was awesome and really well run.

Most of what is going on is pre-registered events but there are some other things to do if you are not in one.

Friday afternoon there will be open gaming for 40K and Epic.
Friday night there will be demos of Robotech RPG Tactics with some nice loot provided by Palladium Books.
Saturday at 8pm is the Chris Bledsoe Memorial Fund Raiser, raffles for cool stuff to raise money for cancer research and treatments.
All weekend long there will be a garage sale style vending including very old goodies, terrain and bits.

If you would just like to visit then there is no charge. An open gaming badge gets you a swag bag and participation.

I'm still trying to figure all this out.

Do you guys realize that you don't have times posted, just dates?

I stopped by to see what it was like.

The guys running it where really polite and friendly - have been doing this event since 2009. All of the players I talked to were very nice as well. The atmosphere was pretty relaxed and fun. There was a bar across the hall so I'm sure that helped.

It was definitely more of a preregistered, narrative style, tournament than a 'con'. I believe times and pertinent information was emailed to registrants in an event pack; hence why I couldn't find event times. There were18 tables, 40-45 people (I suspect the size is kept around 50 on purpose. I'm not sure if they're trying to grow the event, I didn't ask.), so not too big, not quite what I was expecting, but everyone seemed to be having fun.

Depending on what 2016 brings I'm tentatively planning to do the Friday Night Fight and/or Open Gaming.

Armies Represented: Space Marines, Space Wolves, Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Astra Militarum, Imperial Knights, Orks, Eldar, Khorne Daemonkin, Chaos Space Marines

My full write up did not go through when I tried to post it so I will do installments.

Our seventh year was a blast!

You can find a huge amount of photo coverage at our Facebook page:

Friday at MechaniCon 2015

Friday's events included the Battlefleet Gothic tournament returning for a seventh year at the con. Steve Smith continued his dominance in the sector with his 7th win!

The Friday Night Fight was conquered by Mike Ludwig and his Ork Kult of Speed. At 3000 points we had hoped to see a Warlord Titan but one owner who hoped to attend with one was unable to attend.

Tom Roache ran demos of Robotech RPG Tactics. This was especially nice as it was back in 2009 when Tom was play testing his original game design at MechaniCon that lead to the finished game by Palladium Books!

Open gaming and lots of beer helped get everyone ready for the GT on Saturday...

Automatically Appended Next Post:
oni,
We had been growing every year since we started with the addition of other clubs running their own events. Last year was very disappointing as organizers since we had 3 game manufacturers bail at the last minute and two TO's not show up as well. At that time we made the decision to get back to our roots and just focus on the events our club run. Our passion is the Warhammer 40,000 universe and the Grand Tournament atmosphere.

While this limits our attendance, it allows us to offer the players an enjoyable environment that cannot be found anywhere else. The quality of terrain, plenty of space, lots of great rewards and the positive aspects of gaming lead to a very different experience.

Tony
