Two considerations have lead me to an idea about an introductory event format for new players of Warhammer 40k. I played a modified version of DBA (A fast play ancients and medieval rule system) with 12 players. It used half armies (admittedly the number of playing pieces is small) of six units, with a core of three units and three selected each battle. These were 6 on 6 player massed battles with about half the players new to the system if I recall. The person gaining the most prestige points (taking out the enemy general, taking out a particular type of unit, etc.) controlled the new battle general, with the second most the opposing general.

Warhammer 40k is expensive as is many miniature games of similar scale (as far as I know). I wonder if a lot of people go more for board games and card games as an alternative. Just don't know.

Anyway, an introductory event which allows a new player to field a 100 point unit, perhaps newly built and painted, and perhaps select a provided 100 point unit (each battle, from a pool of units), may have the potential to attract new players. Four to six, or more, players per side play the battle, add length to the battlefield as needed.

An alternative is when people look around at figures they see that a rulebook is $85.00 and a starter set is $110.00. I don't know if the small version is available any more. Wasn't it $55.00? You could have such an event once a month with newer players building armies, bringing in new players, etc. If purchasing, two players could split a Tactical Squad box for $20.00 each. An Assault Squad or a Dire Avengers squad box are $33 and $35. If a player doesn't like the game, they're not in for much, and may explore it again later. If they do, you might have a larger game next time.
