Hey! I'm new to this hobby, well kinda new. My brother played it a for a while, and he got me interested in it. I'm excited to start playing games, even if I have a very, very small knowledge of the rules. I'm starting up an IG/AM army and any help will be greatly appreciated!

AM/IG are a fun army to get into. You can usually choose one of two options. Choose an armored force and go with a bunch of tanks, or choose to go infantry heavy and get lots and lots of bodies on the board.

To get more familiar with the rules I found that helped to watch some youtube video battlereports, and then also just to go down to the FLGS and sit in as an observer of a game.

The GW website is the best place to start, check out all the armies and when you find one you like head down to your FLGS and grab yourself a box of troops that you like the look of and a cool looking HQ from the same army.
Don't worry about rules too much just your favourite troops and HQ from a faction and build them up and ask someone to give you an intro game.
For Guard that'd probably be a Guardsman squad and a command squad.
