A 15 pointer for Cryx. Looking to get into the game with a super small force, and Cryx jacks look killer. These are my first few thoughts, so play nice! I also will mention that I don't wanna build a super hard list, just something with a cool theme and a functioning strategy. Also, not sure about tiers or anything, all I have is a borrowed mk2 book, so that's what I'm working with for now. All comments are welcome and thanks for reading!
Gaspy
Slayer jack, 6 pts (from caster allowance)
2 x Reaper jacks, 7 pts each
Necrotech & Thrall, 1 pts
So this little list is based around Gaspy's crazy focus replenishing feat, and getting living enemies with drag to feed him souls. The Necro is there to help heal jacks, and also create Scrap Thralls to bomb stuff. Slayer is there because he can do some neat stuff with his 2 open fists. If I can manage to drag 2 enemies into the trap area the Slayer can throw one into the other for extra havoc. Or at least I think so... lol! Also, Gaspy can probably safely do most of the heavy lifting by himself right? With all that focus he can move ahead of the jacks, throw down spells and teleport away. The feat just seems so useful it's hard to discern when to use it for max effect. I mean, you could dump all his focus onto the jacks, activate the jacks first, drag some enemies into range with both Reapers. Blow all their focus on making sure you get the drags off and buying an extra attack, probably 3 focus each on the reapers and one on the Slayer. After you activate both Reapers, then you pop the feat on Gaspy, who is standing behind your jacks. Give the Slayer Scything Touch, and then Teleport Gaspy directly behind the two dragged models with 3 focus left to camp. Then you activate the Slayer who still has 1 focus to burn. Use those open fists to throw one model into another and hopefully you just gained Gaspy 2 soul tokens. Next turn he has 9 focus to spread around. Not bad.
I think this may be a little weak for 15 points and I'm blowing a lot of focus on jacks to get them to work right. Seems counter intuitive when Gaspy can do so much more, but I think over the course of a game I can manage focus well enough to run the jacks, and still utilize Gaspy. Also, there isn't anything stopping a guy from throwing Gaspy into melee to harvest more souls. With my tactic described above you could potentially lure in some juicy targets for more drag shots, who wouldn't be tempted to take a shot at your caster? Since Gaspy is a bit smaller than a jack, couldn't the Reapers fire their Harpoon Guns past him next turn and drag units into melee range of him, as well as the Slayer?
Anyways, there it is. My 5 model Cryx list. Let me know what you guys think, could this work in a 15 point game or am I too fragile?
Automatically Appended Next Post: Another list, very similar but subbing out Gaspy for Denny and dropping the Solo.
Denny
Slayer jack, 1 point (5 from caster allowance)
2x Reaper jacks, 7 points each.
Again we are relying on the Reapers to pull stuff into a nice little trap area. Although this time we are focusing on debuffing the enemy models so as to make them softer targets for the Reapers. To really make the Reaper go you need to give it 3 focus, 1 to make sure Drag works, and two for auto hitting attacks. However with Denny making enemies weaker you could give the Reapers 1 focus each to buy an extra attack and rely on the debuffs provided by Denny to get the Drag. Or vice versa! So now instead of leaving Denny with zero focus now she has 4 since the Slayer needs at least one focus still too.
Here is one idea for using Denny and the Reapers to Drag a juicy target waaay out of formation and stomp it. You set it up so that Denny is out front with Reaper A slightly behind, and the other one (Reaper B) about 5 inches or so behind that. Put the Slayer beside Reaper B. Give each jack 1 focus. Activate Denny first and pop Parasite on the target model. Camp your last focus. Now activate the closest Reaper and boost your attack to get the Drag off. Since the targets ARM is lowered they will be easier to damage. Now activate your second Reaper and Drag that same model all the way back to where the Slayer can pound on it. Then activate your Slayer and swing away! If the model survives it won't matter squat because it will hopefully be way out of CMD range!
Also, you could just dump all your focus onto the jacks, keeping the whole army in a tight formation. Drag two models in with boosted attack rolls, then pop Dennys feat and clean up with the Slayer. Or you could save 2 focus, giving the Reapers 2 each and the Slayer 1. Once you've Dragged two models (probably living non-jacks I think, from the wording) into the trap area, activate Denny and use Influence to get those two models to whack each other. Finish any survivors off with the Slayer and hopefully grab a couple extra focus next turn.
The more I think about it, there are so many ways to make this work, or rather so many ways to utilize this trick. At least from my newb perspective anyways. I think this could be a fun way to play Cryx, even if it's not the best use of the caster.
Another idea is to switch out the Slayer jack for a cheap deathjack and make use of the arc node to drop spells at a better range. You can then move up the board with a bit more confidence knowing that your fragile jacks are somewhat protected.
