I'm new to fantasy and am looking to startup an army for Age of Sigmar. I've narrowed down my choices to Lizardmen and Chaos warriors/daemons. I looked through some of their rules last night, but there are so many models it's hard to quickly get an idea of what an army is like/what a good army composition would be.

So far I've understood Lizardmen to be powerful casters able to summon practically any unit to reinforce your army, and that they're more melee focused. Chaos (either Khorne or Tzeentch summoning Khorne units) would also be good at these things.

So what're some of the different strengths/weaknesses of these armies? Any help with this decision would be great. Thanks!

I havent read either's Warscrolls yet. But in most recent iterations, Lizardmen have been magic and melee heavy w/ some speed and monsters, while Chaos has been pretty much at least good at everything.

Either way, I'd suggest not spending too much as any old models not in the AoS starter will probably be phased out/creeped out in a year or so.

You think they'll move that fast? I'd imagine some of the newer or better looking models would be safe

The newer models will likely be safe. Anything with a warscroll. Models in the appendix will likely be canned though.

Anyone notice how lizard men except for Slann are all classified as Order Daemons now? Interesting to see how the fluff will go for them.

If they are Daemons..who's their god?

Dunno, but all their wizards can "summon" more of them similar to how Chaos Daemons are summon. Since they're called Seraphon now, the new lore will likely come to explain it. They also have rules that antagonize Chaos Daemons so it appears Lizardmen are the good guy daemons.

That..makes no sense..They are clearly lizards and not daemons. What happened to them floating off into space?

No clue. My guess is the new "seraphon" models won't look much like the current Lizardmen.

There is not this idea.

I still don't have a very good impression of what's what in this new setting. The obvious first impression I got from the "Seraphon" thing is that they're kind of angelic now? Mysterious figures who appear out of nowhere to destroy demons, etc.

It's an odd time. I feel like chaos might be the safest choice right now, because they really don't change that much.

They're safe because you can use all of those sweet looking Khorne models in your 40k army. Magnetize some packs and bolt pistols and you have some very sexy berserkers.

That and even if Daemons change. They'll still fit in. All Daemons are constantly changing

The Seraphon serve some dragon god that Sigmar made friends with, from what I remember of vague screenshots from the White Dwarf before it came out. My FLGS didn't order any White Dwarf until Friday so it'll be a while before I actually see it...

You could always ignore the current fluff, and just keep it in the old world.... if you do (which I personally advise) then I would go lizards... more interesting

Yeah, Lizards > Chaos. Everyone will have Chaos now it's in the starter set.

Then again if you like Khorne that starter set has really some of the most gorgeous Chaos miniatures ever made by GW.

It's still mainly a matter of aesthetics, tho, as both armies are beatsticky with a tint of magic.

What're the chances of updated Lizardmen models soon? Some of the older ones look a bit dated.

Buy the starter box, it gives you a nice starting phase, you got a nifty set of rather cheap models and just wait until more info comes out, remember you can combine both the khorne and sigmarines into a single force for larger combat, or use the smaller heroes and units for skirmish combat...

that way you can playtest and learn the game before more info in released, if you want, buy whatever model you actually "like" as there are no restriction on what you use, so buy what you like the look of and wait for new releases to come out and the older things phased out, I am sure some of the newer models will last longer but looking at the starter box, good things are coming... I believe "fire" infused slayers are on the way... I personally bought a hell-pit abomination even though I do not like skaven just because I love the look of the model and since I can use it in any army (even the orks or undead or even sigmarine) its not going to waste... so really, buy whatever you like, heck buy nagash and convert him into an undead lizaard necromancer and the just convert heaps of skeleton lizard and use them in your lizardmen army or chaos army.

Maybe in a few years. They were updated last year I think? And there were fears of them being squatted. So I don't think they're up for a release any time soon.

I'll probably start Chaos for now until Lizardmen are eventually updated. I really love the starter kit models so it works out well. Thanks everyone!
