G'day everyone.

Thought I should introduce myself, You can call me Corz.

I'm keen to get back into 40k again, haven't had anything to do with the hobby since about 2nd/3rd edition and can see there's been a few editions since then.

I used to have a small Ultramarines army until it got stolen but I'm pretty keen to start again, there have been a lot of changes to rules, codex's etc over the past few years so just wondering if someone might like to chime in for a few suggestions, I've always like the ultras, they have a really good story behind them (IMO) and would like to start up another ultra army, but I've seen the Dark Vengeance box and have been thinking about starting a DA army for something different.

What are peoples thoughts on the DA codex? is the current one competitive?

The Dark Angels armies seem to confuse me a little, can someone tell me if they are are either Deathwing or Ravenwing or are they both separate sections of a single force? if that makes sense?

What should I get to start playing, obviously I need a rulebook and codex, templates, dice, etc, but troop choices...Should I be getting a named hq or just a captain, chaplain or librarian, and if so which would be the better choice for someone starting out?

What points value should I be working around for typical gameplay, I've seen numbers range from 500-3000.

Sorry for all the questions for my inro post but I'm trying to work out where and how to start this again.

Thanks to everyone in advance, and can't wait to see what you think.

May the emperium shine upon you

First off, welcome! Both DA and regular Marines (including Ultras) got a new Codex in the last month or so. In a lot of people's eyes, both are improvements from their previous books. The Dark Angels' most potent builds seem to revolve around their Ravenwing stuff.

Deathwing is the name of the Dark Angels' First Company. They are all equipped with Terminator armour.

Ravenwing is the name of the Dark Angels' Second Company. They use fast attack stuff like bikes and Land speeders.

The tactical Marines from the Dark Vengeance can of course be used as well, and represent anything from the 3rd to 9th Companies. The 10th Company would consist of Scouts, who got a good buff in the most recent book.

Standard tournament play is 1850 points. 500-750 would be a good place to start while you're learning the rules, and if you have 2000-2500 points worth of stuff total then you can swap things in and out as you want.

Thank you for the welcome, and I really appreciate the advice

It's all been a little, alright more than a little, daunting to say the least, but what you've said gives me a bit more insight as to where I want to start and given me something to think about in regards to how to plan my army.

I think I might have to look more into DA's now, I've always loved the look of them, and it's good to hear the codex's have had some improvements, when I googled them (DA's) there seemed to be a fair bit of hate for the previous codex which sort of started to make me question whether I'd really want to play as them.

And thank you for clearing up the points question, that really give me a good idea on how to begin to build up my force. and where to roughly aim to get to.

Aye welcome to Dakka, always glad to see a new face! As far as building an army goes I'm a Tyranid player so I don't know much about DA, but I suggest you download Vassal and the 40k module to experiment with different army lists and models. Vassal is a free board game simulator and you can download modules to play your favorite board and tabletop games such as W40K. For free. Also 500 points is a good starting army but you'll eventually need a bigger army and you might find that some of your models in your 500 point games might not be suitable for higher point games. Therefore I suggest you build the ideal 2000 point list or so and work towards that.

Once again, welcome to the dakka community!

Hey Corz, welcome to Dakka and welcome back to the hobby!

I too was lured back to the hobby after nigh-on 20 years 'missing in action', and it's certainly changed a fair bit in that time!

Enjoy Dakka - they're a pretty good bunch, for the most part

All the best,

James

Cheers for the welcome guys

Thanks Fasi, I've never heard of Vassal until now, I'll have to go scope it out, sounds interesting. Hopefully my laptop can run it...it's about a decade old hahaha, but should be getting my desktop back pretty soon which will run anything

I've got a mate who seems pretty keen to get into 40k as well, so I'm thinking about something small for us to learn with but still have a larger force in mind and see if I can ultimately work the 2 together. So much to think about

Yeah I've been out of action for roughly 15 years, give or take, from what I've been reading it's changed a lot since, I can't wait to get back into it again, once I'm over the first few hurdles I should be alright, would probably be easier with the rules and codex, I have pdf versions on the pc but it's so much easier with hard copies...maybe I'm just old school

Peace (or war)

Automatically Appended Next Post:
Just quickly, should have asked this earlier, Does the Dark Vengeance box come out with the 7th edition rules yet or is GW still releasing it with the 6th Ed rules? I'm starting to seriously consider a DA army now but not sure if it's worth it if I'm going to have fork out a fortune to get the new rules on top.

Or would there be a cheaper way to start my force? Just liking the idea of the DV box so a mate can come around and start playing/learning at the same time, but I'm all for cheaper options.

Also I appologise if I should be asking this somewhere else in the forum

Hi,

Welcome to Dakka
